New Guinness Record - longest MINI convoy

I saw a thread on MINI2 yesterday and now this article on MotoringFile:

A convoy of 269 MINIs in England!!! Pretty cool. I can't believe the previous record set by a Vancouver MINI club in 2004 stood for so long (195 MINIs).

Anyone state-side want to set a new record now???

What was the longest MINI convoy you were a part of???

I wonder how many MINIs will be at the Dragon Parade? Maybe we should call the guiness people and get them down there. My longest MINI convoy was 24 cars.

And what about MINI Takes The States???

Those folks at Guinness need to get their noses out of the pint glass and take a peek across the pond to see what we've been up to.

But I say we get documentation in order to beat the "official" record at the Dragon Parade next month!

Found it! www.guinnessworldrecords.com I don't know who would go about doing this, but here's some information:

How do I apply to set or break a record?

The first thing you need to do is to tell us what record you're interested in breaking. Do this by registering and filling in the form found in the "Break a World Record" section of the website.
If you tell us that you want to break an existing record we'll send you the current record details and the relevant rules and guidelines for you to follow when you attempt to break that record.
If you wish to try something that hasn’t been done before or have already attempted a potential record then we'll need to pass your suggestion on to our research department first. They'll decide if it's something that we're interested in establishing as a new record category. If we are, they'll draw up the necessary guidelines and send them to you. If not, we can always suggest other records that you may wish to attempt.

What is Record Adjudication?

A record adjudicator is an official Guinness World Records Judge who will attend your event and verify your record immediately if successful. It is possible to establish a record without having an adjudicator present at the event – However you may find that inviting a representative from Guinness World Records will hugely increase the profile of your event and create more media interest because your record will be immediately announced and the representative will present you with a Guinness World Record Certificate.
Guinness World Records adjudicators often attend these types of events, to ensure the record is carried out according to the guidelines provided. They are well trained in media interviews, and will be available prior to, during and post the event to speak to radio, TV and newspaper journalists about your record. At the event, should it be successful, the representative will immediately present a framed Guinness World Records certificate recognising your achievement. The certificate presentation will be an important element of your event and will attract a lot of attention from the media.
As part of our adjudication service, we also include a review of your press release; our internal Press Office will be available to examine your press release and help distribute it to the media. Also we will endeavour to circulate the record and the pictures you will supply after the record has been established or broken. In addition to this, we will provide you with a quick and friendly service to help you solve any enquiry regarding the rules, guidelines and the organisation of the record attempt with a Records Manager from our London office who will be dedicated to your record attempt
This service can only be offered to a selected number of claimants and incurs an attendance fee plus costs of travel, all transfers to and from the event and accommodation if necessary.

My first thought was MTTS or AMVIV... I'm sure there were times when there was a long line of MINIs... but according to Guinness, this is their criteria (taken from MINI2 thread):

"According to the Guiness World Records every MINI has to drive a minimum of 2 miles, the cars should be no more than 2 car lengths apart and yes, it does need to be unbroken"

Now, I've been part a a couple of nice long caravans... but I know it doesn't meet THAT criteria. Usually you'll have someone not in a MINI cut into the line, thus breaking the convoy (like cutting off a funeral procession )

If you guys want to do this at MOTD.. we'll have to get moving Does anyone know how many MINIs participated in the Dragon Parade in years past??

Based on
post by Pamalalala (thanx btw ) .. if we want to break the record, we'll have to pay for them to be there. I don't know how much a round-trip ticket is from London to Atlanta.. also, where to lodge the judge, plus all of the media types that would follow along. I think it would be a great event to plan. Not sure if it's possible to arrange this for MOTD5.. maybe MOTD6???

Thoughts.. suggestions???

I think if there was interest then this could be considered for next year. No way this could happen this year.

It looks like an attempt will be made to break the record...

taken from MF article :
Quote from Simon Biggs:

We will be attempting to beat the record just in Blackpool UK set on JUNE 10th 2007 in Virginia Beach VA. This will be a benefit for the families of fallen Navy Seals. We need all who would like to be involved to contact us. We would love to bring the record back to the US. Any and all support is welcome. Contact us thru any of the local club sites.

I have already contacted Guinness. The local police here will co-ordinate with us and the Seals will help to record VIN# etc that Guinness requires.

Anyone here helping out on this?? I'm curious to know the total cost to have a Guinness judge present for a record breaking attempt. Are there sponsorships from MINI dealers or are participants expected to foot the bill?? Anyone??

With your traffic lights set by the mafia, I can't see it happening unless it's outside of town.

Here's a link to a rivercityminis.org thread on the attempt

Not sure what the final tally was for the Valley of the Fire Run at AMVIV this year but I think it was about 150 cars. That was pretty impressive. Should be easy enough to drive 2 miles if you do it out of town and have a staging area like the Valley of Fire Car park and then drive back towards Vegas.

Something to aim for next year!!!

That's why the Virginia Beach Police Dept. has offered to block the intersections so that the parade can proceed uninterrupted.

We encourage and welcome all MINI drivers to participate. There is absolutely no registration fee. Monies will be raised via various forms of sponsorship (corporate, individual, etc.) and from the sale of hats, t-shirts, etc. and the proceeds are being given to the Memorial Fund for Fallen USNavy Seals.

We're thinking that we might have to finally involve the local police in the Strip Cruise for next year. The idiot behind the blocker cars who wanted to fight the blocking drivers would be less upset with a Metro officer, I'm sure.
Seriously, who takes the Las Vegas Strip to get to work!?!?!

Your website shows 2am start, is that correct? To keep outside traffic to a minimum?
