R56 $500 mud flaps!
$500 mud flaps!
Someone just told me that a MINI dealer quoted him a price of approximately $500, plus the cost of the flaps, to install MINI mudflaps on the 2007 MCS. The same dealer wrote into my contract that they are charging me $25 to install them (plus the $62 for the flaps). Supposedly, the dealer just learned they have to take off the rear bumper to mount them. Sounds like bull to me. Plus, that wouldn't explain why installation of the front flaps would cost almost as much as the rear. Maybe the dealer just doesn't feel like bothering with them???
Well... at least on the old MINI...
I was just looking at the sam ething.
According to the install instructions from
http://motoringfile.com/howto/Rear%20Mud%20Flaps.PDF
http://motoringfile.com/howto/Front%20Mud%20Flaps.PDF
you get about 1.0 hours fro the rear mud flaps and 0.5 hours install fees for the front wheel mud flaps.
So - the pricing for the mud flaps is $25.50 + $36.00 and the
install fees are usually 100$/hour (dang!).
That should take you somewhere around 220-240$. Lots of money, if you ask me...

Regardless of the price, people should know that the mudflaps will do nothing as far as keeping the boot clean. Unless you think they look cool, there's not much of a function to them. In any case, $500 is definitely criminally insane.
Actually, they do quite a lot to keep mud and pebbles from hitting the side windows and door panels, especially on a fwd car. The rear, not so much.
We have a lot of loose rock around here as the roads are always under construction. My only hope is the mud flaps take the brunt of a rock off the ground.
They have done well in my Lexus. I have destroyed 4.5 sets of them in the last 15 months and the body is still ding/chip free from the rocks.

Just buy the flaps from a NAM sponsor, have a trusted garage install, probably save mega dollars!!

I've ordered them for my R56 and was hoping they would help knock down the water mist that's kicked up while driving in wet conditions. My reasoning is that it'll make it easier for those cars behind me to see and less likely to run into me. Does this make sense?

Based on the issue date of these guides this looks like installation for the R53/50. Not sure if this will be applicable for the R56. My dealer says he can do it himself in the showroom. Hoping he will toss that in with my mats.
They do help alot, also at the boot. I have them on a 1999 CRV and a honda Accord. If you live in Northern Alabama, when it rains you can get red mud on roads. If you drive through it I can attest to their help, just by looking at the condition of the car, and the interior of the flap afterward. Yea the boot will still get dirty, but nothing like it would have without.
I suspect the dealer, which is extremely backed-up, just didn't want to bother with the mud flaps since there is virtually no profit in them. Apparently, and logically, there is no need to remove the bumper. Anyway, I got my contract, so I'm not worried.
Got an hour and a jack???
Ordered front and rear for 2007 MCS from "OutMotoring", spent about 1 hour 10 minutes to install all 4(Dealer has a lift, I had to remove/re-install each tire/wheel)I can't see spending that kinda cash for a dealer install, so I thought ahh...how hard can this be......Instructions would have been nice, but if you review the R50/53 PDF the R56's go on very(not quite the same) easily. If I could figure out how to post pictures here I have a few...........
For on acount of because they help minimize mud and stones, kicked up by the tires, from hitting the side of the car or the car behind you. It is the polite thing to do.
Don't waste your money. I've got 70k miles on my MINI and the spot right in front of the rear wheels where these guards go hasn't a single scratch or rock chip.
There are ones for behind the front wheels, which are the drive wheels.
Updating my original post, now that my car is on the boat, my MA gave me the "have to remove the bumpers, it is expensive" routine. I reminded her I have a contract saying it will cost me $25 to install. I am waiting for her response. In the meantime, does anyone know about this? When I look at pics on the configurator, the flap lips go over, not under, the bumper. It just seems assinine to me that you would have to remove a bumper to mount a mud flap.
