Anyone had the driving lamps fitted?

My MA told me yesterday that the driving lamps I ordered have arrived, so I'm due to go in to have them fitted. Does anyone know where the on/off switch is placed? I don't seem to have any blanked off places to install it.

It's on the colorline panel to the left of the steering wheel. Actually that whole panel is replaced. Make sure the dealer got you the right colorline-matching panel.

The switch just controls "turn on the driving lamps when the high beams are on" and "leave the driving lamps off all the time".

It won't allow you to turn the driving lamps on at will.

Thanks for the tip, I think I know the small panel you mean. Do you have a photo of the panel with the switch installed?

I actually ordered the driving lamps from Classic MINI today. Hopefully installation is easy because I'm planning on installing these myself.

I went ahead and uploaded some pictures of the driving lamps to my SmugMug page. Warning -- the originals are huuuuge. :-)

Thanks for those! On a dark Silver car, too. Excellent.

Makes my decision to get them that much easier. I think the new car seems to need some type of light mounted up front to break up the flatter face. Very cool.

I guess a new grill is needed too? It seems like the mounting brackets for the lights goes through it.

Yep, the grill has the brackets built-in. THere's three parts required. The lamps themselves, the replacement grill, and the replacement interior switch panel.

How much did they charge you for the installation?

I'm trying to add them in the near future. What I got for parts is;

Driving Lights - Item # 63 21 0 420 292 - $292.00
Driving Lights Grille - Item # 63 13 0 422 707 - $107.50
Driving Lights Switch - Item # 51 45 0 428 xxx - $110.00

That makes about 510$ + tax for the parts. I am getting charged 96$/hour for the install for the lights - and was quoted 2 1/2 hours for the setup.

Did you get comparable prices?

Well - tall order (780$)

510$ for parts (as written above) and 240$ for the install (2 1/2 h x 96$). That makes it (after tax on the parts)... 780$... A bit too much for what I'd pay... And the other thing is that (it seems) they change the grille (that is chromed on my MC silver) to a honeycomb black...

Try Morristown MINI for the parts;
Driving Lights - Item # 63 21 0 420 292 - $233
Driving Lights Grille - Item # 63 13 0 422 707 - $86
Driving Lights Switch - Item # 51 45 0 428 xxx - $52
Total =$371.00
You'll have to pay delivery but I can't see it being $139.00 which is the difference.

By the way, if anyone is going to the MOTD and wants to try to do the install with another novice to moding, I'd love to try to do mine. I can post a thread in the MOTD area and see if there is anyone with any experience with DL installs that might want to help. I'd love to add them but I don't want to add them if I have to add another $250 to 300 for installation.

Me too, me too!

MOTD falls right on my birthday - so I'll buy drinks for that!

(guess I'll get cheaper with few kegs of beer rather than the horrendous install fees).

MMM

(BTW - I emailed Morristown MINI the requests - let's see their answer. Thaks for the advice).

I ordered mine from Classic MINI through Paul. Classic Mini gives NAM members 20 percent discount. Shipping is 20 bucks. My lights should arrive at the end of the week. BTW, I buying parts for my car I don't even have yet (it's at the VDC).

Yes - 20% off and no tax...

...and decent shipping prices. I contacted Classic MINI and they offered more or less the same prices as Morristown, NJ. However - because of the geographic proximity - I'll go with Classic MINI (they are few hundred miles away so the shipping prices are better).

That makes the lights (shipped) about 25% off MSRP - somewhere around 372$ for all the three parts (switch, lights, grille) + shipping.

Now all we should find is a fair install pricing. Does someone know how many hours do they charge? The old guide from

http://motoringfile.com/howto/Driving_Lights_902.pdf

shows about 2.5 hours worth of install time/fees.

Since it comes w/ a pre-cut grille, I think it should be easier....hopefully
