my obx is installed

three days ago i installed an obx with OEM cat, and man i can say it rocks,

at first it was a little dissapointing, but it rained heavily and i couldn't drive the car at wot...

yesterday weather was slightly better but i commuted short distances only.... so i could not test the sytem fully...

but today, my god i did medium distances, city a well as freeway, and the weather was sunny and clear skies.... it was so much fun that i made a detour of 10 minutes to my home...

I can say the power dellivery is much more consistent , it isn't a major difference but it is really worth it... my car drives much better, no it drives a little sportier and it does not sound stupidly loud... not at all at normal speeds, but when the beast is unleashed and higher rpm ranges are reached , man, it sounds incredible... i would like to take it into a long tunnel at midnight and open my windows and drive at wot, dowshift and race away in the night.... vroooammm....

forgive my boyish enthousiasm but i can not help it, i am just having so much fun... and planning the next step in the tuning proces allready....it is going to be chipped

(sorry for any spelling mistakes, i am a foreigner )

Cool!

Good to hear that you like it. Most of the reviews are from installs on the MCS...

If you don't mind me asking where did you get it and what did you pay? I would really like to do this in the near future. Also, how is the cat connected?

The header comes

with a spherical graphit bushing and a stub for welding onto whatever. Many weld on the stock cat, as it's pretty good for flow and deals with the rich running that our cars do. I think Helix sells the pair together.

got it from ebay.... prices vary around 150 - 200 (shipping included)
the cat i paid 150 euro for it from a other mini owner who had wrecked his car... i was lucky here, he was not....

if u do not have smog laws in your country or state, the put on a high flow cat, like magnaflow 300 cell or Randomn technologies....

get it, u will like it....

Thanks for the info. I was thinking e-bay for when I get mine. Does anyone know if I can just cut the cat off of my stock header and weld it in place?

Alot of people have cut the OEM cat off and welded it on. I am one maybe few that purchased a new cat and had it welded just in case the OBX broke and I needed a back up on the spot.

Here is a link to a video clip of my MC with the OBX, K&N Typhoon, TSW Damper, and ECU upgraded. (w/ normal driving you'd never know that I've had anything added to my MC)

This may not help much, but here's a pic with my new Cat (non OEM)

I forgot about this till now....
One thing that I wish I had known back when I bought my OBX is that it doesn't have a flex joint. Some thing else to consider/be aware of.
Motor On!

Now look what you've done! I want this mod! Damn, and I'd made it about 60 days without a mod...time to go back to Modifiers Anonymous.

Seriously, nice job guys.

The graphite gasket creates a spherical surface that the other part mates with. The springs on the bolts allow the joint to flex. This is also used on a lot of longitudinal engines as this type of junction takes twist better than a bellows.

They do, but only to a point (ie.... say your wife backing up this winter and hitting a "rail road tile" that is hidden by a pile of snow) :-(

i could've created a new thread but thought i'd post here:

does the original Supersprint headers have better numbers in terms of power & torque increase compared to an OBX header?

I belive that the OBX is a copy of the Supersprint.... So the nubers should be the same.

difficult question, because i never had a SS header installed and dynod on my car.

i do know that another mini owner from Holland had similar mods on his car , and he had his car dynod and chipped at the same shop as i did.

he had a SS header with SS high flow cat and SS catback system (complete system) and he was putting down after the chiptuning a max of 180 torque,

mine was max. 158 torque with a OEM CAT...and SS catback system

the hp of our cars was the approx. the same with mine +- 126 hp and his around 127

but i asume the SS HIGH FLOW CAT made the real difference here. I suggest u get a high flow cat in between and an obx header and a SS catback system for optimal TORQUE performance gain .

But if the money is no problem, u should get a full SS system on your car .

Or you run an ONX header...straight pipe...to a 4.5" OBX exit muffler like I will and then dyno it.

Yesterday I put a Megan header on my MC and it works great, like one of the guys said "it performs better", the sound is almost the same. My header has a cat-delete pipe, it's just a litle resonator and it works great, and I also installed a MCS ALTA filter on my MC, yes the red cone!!. I love the sound combination!!! This weekend I'm going to install a borla cat-back, I will try to put some pics and sound clips, so stay tuned. I hope I can get some HP with these mods.

Yes I'm runnig cat-less, sorry, I can't give you the sound clip, I already installed the borla cat-back today I couldn't resist, but before the borla it feels great ,you can feel that the mini can breath freely, there's a litle difference in sound about 3500 rev's and up but not a great deal, I really recommed to all MC owners to put a header, they will feel the difference and a better performance on their MC's

Well, the megan header comes with the 2 O2 sensors plugs, so I'm using the 2 sensors, and everything works same as before, no lights, no problems

What all was done to these 2 cars to make these numbers? If possible, name brands. Pretty impressive if it was all bolt ons, ie-no head or cam swaps.

yes only boltons and chiptuning.

obx header, original mini cooper catalytic converter, supersprint catback exhaust, pipercross viper filter (which gives a few hp) . the other cooper had an original supersprint header and original supersprint metalic catalytic converter, supersprint catback and pipercross viper filterkit...
