Reorganized site is s - l - o -w

Since the forums were reorganized, I've noticed it takes a long time for pages to load. The NAM header loads fine, but everything below takes 10 to 15 seconds to appear. This happens whenever I go to a new page (User CP, post reply, post new thread, opening a thread, etc.).

Nothing has changed on my end, so I assume it has something to do with the new site. Any thoughts?

There were reports in the last week of slow access to the site. The server has not had significant load on it and I have not seen any delay in loading from my location (1,000 miles from the NAM server). Given this there may be some type of routing delay between you and the server. If you are familiar with using traceroute it may shed some light on where the delays are. As for the header loading quickly that is because it is cached in your browser.

Thanks

Mark

Same here....

based on Marks suggestion, I found... http://vostrom.com/PAP/download.opp This is a trace tool that tells you latency. There are a couple of slow servers between me and NAM, but I'm getting initial replies that are much, much slower. I'm thinking it's my local ISP (comcast) that's the bottle neck... But I'm not sure. The trace tool says the average latency between me and NAM is a bit less than a half a second. But when I ping my router, sometimes it takes over 2 seconds to get a reply! And I've got three routers to play with, so it's not them. They all do it!

Matt

SLOW, SLow slow!!! My seat of the desk dyno tells me that NAM has slowed down since the reorganization, reformating, whatever a week or so ago. It also appears that during the midday when the posts used to be counted at about 250 to 300, they are now around 110 to 150. If it doesn't come up fast and transistion from page to page quickly, then we find somewhere else to browse.

The site is veeeeerrrrrrry slow for me today as well. I'm on a T1 connection. Many times it just stalls out altogether, and I have to hit refresh to resume the slooooooow page loading process. Longer pages of threads are taking several minutes to appear.

I'm with Comcast too and although my download speeds are super fast--near 3x T1 (4Mb), NAM is excruciatingly slow as well.

This is what Tracert shows for me. Seems the problems are in both the Los Angeles and Dallas routers.

Slow for me as well, but only today. Yesterday was fine, although I don't know when the new changes went online.

Using a VisualRoute applet I'm showing some really weird fluctuations happening in Texas with ThePlanet.com routers. Hops are fluctuating between 30ms to 500ms.

It's been all around slow for me over the past 2 days both at home and at work. I initially thought it might have been an issue with my connection at home (where I first noticed it) but I've been to a couple of other sites that use different providers and it's been sluggish everywhere.

It has been fast at work but sometimes, lately, the initial page loading is slow on my laptop at home but I have attributed that mostly to my squirrelly wireless router

I'll check the trace thing; but I've been having slow issues all weekend despite every other site I visit popping up quickly. I even lost it all together Sunday afteroon and last night both for hours at a time.

It's fine for me today, and I'm a different location than yesterday, when it was superslow. Maybe it is related to local networks?

Seems to be limited to certain time of the day.

It was fine this morning but unusable a couple of hours ago. Granted I am in UK so not expecting blinding performance but the speed remains an intermittent issue.

For those that are seeing slow access to the site at times can you private message me the following information:

1) the IP address reported by www.whatismyip.com
2) the time and date you are seeing the slow access

I'll do a traceroute from the server to the IP address showing and see if there are any slow spots along the route. As I've said before I've been monitoring server load and it is minimal...certainly not enough to reflect the delays some are seeing.

Thanks!

Mark

I have had no problems on NAM with it being slow. I have Verizon DSL from home and also access it with an AT&T T1 line from work, and a Mobile Broadband Connection via Laptop on the Verizon network and is only a tad slower than when accessing from home, due to a slower connection speed and mobile broadband is also a very latent connection. My guess is it is not NAM but various routers throughout the country that are probably overloaded.

Here's a handy speed test that lets you test throughput to servers in several cities. Handy in combination with traces...

Mark,

With the site reorganization, were there any changes made that may reduce the ability to cache parts of NAM in the browser? Were any META directives changed or anything like that?

I've noticed intermittent slow downs also; like mentioned above the header appears but pages initially load slower.

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with IE 7? I bit the bullet and loaded IE 7 around the same time the new site design was rolled out.

Hmmm...
