MINI Boost Gauge kit problem -help

I purchased the Mini Boost gauge kit that mounts on under the tach. Mini instructions are very straight forward and so is the install. The problem is all the electrics have gone nuts since installing the harness inline behind the toggle panel. You simply unplug the harness from the switch panel and plug it in to the accessory harness then plug the other end to the switch panel. Nothing works correctly. The voltage meter only changes with the instrument light brightness. Power windows only work with the headlights on etc. It acts like the harness isn't plugged in properly. I searched here and found references to the plug, has been known to not line up and getting the pins misaligned. I have checked the basics several times. The plugs are all the way in, I have re-seated them many times to no avail. I can't make the plugs line up any other way. Any ideas? Please......BTW if I remove the accessory harness and put it back stock everything works...

How do the original electrics work if you undo the install? Try this if you have not. In the course of doing so, you may find the new wiring/parts are bad or you may see that something not directly related to the new parts has become disconnected or shorted. If all is OK at this point, try to re-install the new parts. If things are still goofey, then you can be more sure the new parts are bad.

Try disconnecting the pos. & neg. from the volt gauge and see if that makes any difference. Those are the only two electrical connections besides the bulb holders. I too just bought this kit but haven't installed it yet. I certainly hope there isn't anything wrong with it!

Hope you find the problem.

No if I unplug the pos and neg on the volt meter everything is still screwed up. Also the only way the bulbs work is if you reverse the polarity, opposite of what the directions say. The accessory harness has to be wired wrong. I have called and e-mailed Morristown Mini last week to see about swapping the harness but haven't received any communication yet. I was going to order the Ipod connection and a JCW Airbox, but not if I can't resolve a problem....

WOW! I should test mine soon. I hope there isn't a whole bunch of mis-wired ones out there!

Any progress here? I haven't tested mine yet. I just wanted to note that I have Ian's Auto-up circuit. I don't expect any problems, but it will also need to be run inline with the gauge plugs. That will be a lot of stuff crammed into that space behind the toggles. I haven't decided yet which will come first, but keeping the orientation will be a little trickier. I'll have to pay close attention to the way it plugs in.

Actually - I just thought that it would be nice if Ian's circuit had that same locking plug that the toggles harness has, for interest sake, here are the part numbers for those plugs as they appear on the gauge wiring harness.

The receptacle, same as the back of the toggles, is:
AMP, 968 153-1 A
BMW 8 364 655

The female counterpart, one with the locking lever, is:
TYCO
9-967416-1
BMW
8 364 662

Putting these onto Ian's circuit is probably overkill, but I just thought I'd post them for anyone interested in making custom wiring harnesses.

Solution - on electrical issue yea!!!

Ok after having my car apart for over a 10 days, I finally got a return authorization for the wiring harness but they won't ship the new one until they get mine. I had to completely remove the harness anyway so I got the harness, a voltmeter and rigged up a wire to a straight pin. The harness should be a straight through wiring on all 12 pins. What I found was two wires out of place. Looking at the black socket (with the pins) the top row pin 4 from the left and pin one on the bottom row were switched. It took 3 hands to release the wires from the socket and switch them. It was really tight working with it because the wires are very short. Re-installed the harness and everything now works as it should..... Jeez....So now I don't have to ship the harness in. My suggestion, prior to taking everything apart and routing the harness just plug it in to the switch panel and make sure it works properly.

Glad you solved your situation.

Question: How much $$ for the kit from the dealer and does it require any dealer reprogramming?

I believe it lists for $349 but I got it online for $249 from Morristown Mini. No programing is necessary....

I finally plugged mine in and test it today, everything seems to be working. That's a relief. I didn't get to finish the install though, I'm doing a custom cup install since I have the Chronopack and I haven't been able to find an elbow connector for the Boost tube yet. I had the wiring harness plugged into my Ian cull AU circuit though and that worked fine which is good to know!
