I'm sure this has been asked before , but what are the general opinions on aftermarket intakes or air filters?. I have used K&N air filters in my boxster and had some problems with the mass air senser. i think it was the oil from the filter. I even left the filter out all night on a napkin. I later found out that some cars are very sensitive to filter changes. anyways please give opinions and performance "seat of the pants" gains. Thanks
I went with the aFe intake from FlowSource. I really like the sound and the kit included the air box, two filters, cleaning system and they even tossed in some car care stuff. Here's my MC:
I haven't heard of any problems like you're describing with your Porsche, with regard to any of the aftermarket foam or paper air filters on the MINI.
They're all pretty compatible. It just comes down to personal preference. There are K&N and ALTA foam panel filters, for use with the stock MCS air box.
There are plenty of cold-air intake options out there too. I have an ALTA, and I love it. If you love supercharger whine, and want much more of it, this is the solution for you.

+1
The aFe kit from FlowSource is a good value. Parts fit well and it was shipped quick. It adds a nice little growl. I like the extra filter. Here's mine.
I have it (Alta foam filter element for the Cooper). The stock paper is back in for the winter, though.
Why did you put the stock filter back in for the winter? Reason I ask is I have the ITG (foam like yours) air filter and I am running it with no complaints....

Just piece of mind.
I have no evidence that paper is better than foam for filtering out the airborne sand and salt that is around in the winter. But it makes me feel safer to have the stock paper filter in place in the winter. And that's good enough for me.

Ditto! I've heard Johns and it is next on my list.
AFE is a really good filter. I've got it on my 2002 cooper.
I've had K&N panel, Pipercross and K&N Typhoon. The AFE is really the best one for me.
Nice growl and a bit better on the throttle.
A friend of mine went with his MINI with an AFE filter on the dyno and it showed a 4.8Hp increase.
