reinstalling rear parcel shelf

loaded up the mini last night for an out-of-town gig--what a trooper! normally i carry a bass in there (and love the amazed looks when i extract it) but this time i had a loaner instrument awaiting me at the gig, so instead packed up guitar, uke, mic stands, keyboard stand, 2 bandmates, overnight bags, etc...folded a seat down & took the parcel shelf out, both for the first time, and it all worked fabulously.

but--i'm having trouble getting the parcel shelf back in. i think i just have to patiently loop, tug, slip off, repeart as needed in my attempt to getthat little loop back around the thingy it loops around, but i'm getting pretty frustrated. any tips? secrets i should know, like hidden tools? it goes on from the far outside of the thing, right?

thanks much--
diana

its that thing behind the back row that's removable, and it raises slightly when you lift the boot hatch (non cabrio). The cabrio has one too, but it doesnt move when you open the boot hatch

got it! struggling to get the loops back on, i accidently knocked off the little retaining clip--and realized that those are removable, which is what makes it possible to get the loop back on.

I'm glad you figured it out! My MA showed me how when I picked up my car, but I'm too big of a chicken to try again....

FYI, if one removes it form the convertible, you can't put the top down because it has to sit on the microswitch to lower the top. The other recourse would be to tape the switch down, but may not be smart if you haul something big and it breaks the back window.

Is that right? The shelf has to be in there to lower the roof? That seems arbitrarily useless to me - and not in the spirit of motoring.
Has anyone else encountered this?

The person who took it out on the first day must have tried to lower his roof at least once since he/she removed it.

rc is right -- there's a micro-switch depressed by the shelf. Useless? not if it keeps someone from lowering the roof onto a full boot.

The coupe driver who removed his shelf has bigger issues than a micro-switch if he's trying to lower his roof.
