Running speaker wire in front doors??

I have seen people having to drill holes in the connector of the door and then running speaker wire through that hole. What is the thickest gauge wire that can be used through this method? Does anyone have a step by step picture tutorial that tells/shows how to run the wires? How do I remove the door connector to drill it?

Thanks

I did systems in both my 03 Maxima and 05 M3 using RF 6/ 1/2 components and a JL Audio 300/4 amp. Because of the molex connectors running wires to the doors was a real PITA. My exhuastive search had yeilded that the difference in sound quality by running your own (thicker) wires to the doors is minimal if noticeable at all.

Many people on the other boards ran higher wattage amps (the amp rating should determine the thickness of the wires - not the speaker per se) using factory wires and had no issues.

Your 150 watt speakers are probably rated "Peak". You would have to have one hell of an amp in your Mini to drive 150 watts per channel RMS.

Another bonus is that if you have a factory amp in the trunk (which I did on both the Maxima and M3) you can mount your amps into the trunk, remove the factory amp, then tap into the wiring harness that is already run to all the speaker locations (you would have to find what wire goes where). My system was / is LOUD and CLEAR using this method.

Edit - Sub wiring is much more important, you need thick cable there.

Yes it is that piece. When i unbolt the molex connector from the car side, do i slide the connector towards me or away from me?? Have you done this personally?? Is there anyway you can give me a step by step??

Did you just use a normal drill bit to drill the molex plug out?? How did you get the wire into the door side?? When i have the molex plug unbolted and hanging out, do I slide it towards me or away from me??

i think i misunderstood

here's what you need to know :

when you pull that out the connector will release

i used a dremel with a cutter bit
and for pulling the wire trough you need a stiff wire (i used the blue one i the pics, you can see it ducktaped to the speakerwire)

hope this helps

It's not real hard...
remove the bolt and pull that corner AWAY from the body of the car then pull it towards you. It has a tab in the back.. Now pull the locking piece the the two sections will separate. You have to mess with the DOOR gap (opening and closing) to get the harness to separate completely.

That's it. I know it sounds kinda cryptic but when you look at it you'll understand.

If you are just running one set of wires, it is easy. I ran 16 gauge wire through the door connector. I just used a wire hanger to fish it through the flex joint. On the top of the connector there is a gap near the clip it will fit through.
