5th gen iPod trick on OEM adaptor?

I have a dealer-installed OEM iPod adaptor, which I decided to get (instead of the ICE link) because I'd heard talk that there was a trick that made it possible to control a 5th generation iPod directly, from the iPod itself.

Yet after searching, the only "trick" I found (wait 5-10 seconds after plugging iPod into adaptor, then press and hold the Menu button until the iPod menu pops up) didn't work for me.

Help! Anyone able to clarify or confirm?

Bump! Doesn't anyone know this trick? Trying to figure out what it could be is driving me batty!

I've had a MINI iPod interface for almost 2 years...

My iPod is an iPod video 30Gb. It worked with the MINI iPod interface without having to do any "tricks"...

btw, I recently changed for a completely new headunit & iPod interface and realized the MINI solution is very restrictive when it comes to controlling the iPod and other features... (display, ...)

Actually, the "trick" is not to make it work, but to select songs/folders/whatever using the ipod itself, rather than the head unit.

I agree that it's restrictive, but I wasn't sure I'd have the time to put one in myself, and I'm impatient. I figure that once I figure out a better solution, I'll take replace the MINI adaptor. For now, however, I just want to know how to control what comes through my stereo via the iPod controls. (Too much music to sift through, otherwise!)

The trick is to reboot the iPod and connect it to the Mini kit while in the rebooting process. This way, the iPod never enters into UART mode and you are allowed full clickwheel access.
