Hello fellow NAMers! The other day a co-worker of mine, while visiting a car repair body shop, sent me a picture over his phone of a MINI "S" that had suffered a severe head-on collision. Since I had always wondered of the MINI's safety on such crashes and the effect on the cockpit area, I went over with him later on during the day to look at it, since its really close to our office.

I've got to say I was very much impressed with the way the MINI held its own, so I thought I would share some pictures with the community. Take a look:





The cockpit area is in great shape considering the impact the car apparently suffered. I didn't even see any traces of blood anywhere (sorry for the bluntness).

I don't know the owner nor the circumstances of the crash, I just saw the car and took pictures of it. I just hope everyone involved did not suffer serious injuries.

I'm also pretty impressed. Makes me feel better about motoring on those dark 2 lane roads in the middle of no where.

It makes my stomach hurt just by looking at that first picture. The enging is hanging out of the bay, and sideways. Ouch. Something that is comforting is that the passenger cabin look almost undisturbed. Except the airbags, of course.

Something else I noticed is that the antenna is missing. Not sure why, just though I'd point it out.

That's really what impressed me the most.

It wasn't my car that had the accident (thank goodness), although if you looked at how I drive my car sometimes, it really wouldn't be a far fetched assumption that it was .

 

You're safe, no warranty claims.(yet )

 

Great shots of how safe our cars are! Notice that the steering wheel seems bent.

 

I see the passenger airbag didn't deplyy, but the head bag did. I guess it doesn't deploy if there is no one in the seat, but both sides on the head must be triggered together.

 

Of if a child or something under weight was in the seat.

I hope they are okay - great example of how the interior's integrity holds up though

Hard to tell, but the cup holder looks great!!!!

 

Just noticed, and am wondering if that was a JCW. Look's like 17" wheels, but I can't get a real good fix on the brake size.

 

Wow, maybe I can talk my wife into letting me drive my son in the car now. I will have to show her the pictures.

 

VERY impressive and quite reassuring to be honest with you!

 

S-lites only come in 17". It looks like stock brakes. JCW or BBK would fill the wheel more. Plus, you can see the caliper on the left side of the wheel and it isn't colored.

 

Can't quite tell from the pic, but I think the car has a leaky engine mount. The owner should really get that checked out.

The most impressive thing is that the Crime-Against-Nature cupholder is still intact... engine's hanging out, but the fugly cupholder is still A-OK...

 

holy #$%@ did that car take a hard hit. Man like everyone else said it's obvious that the person lived and I'm glad to see that but jesus to rip the engine all the way out like that takes a substantial amount of force.

I was in one or these mishaps...not as bad, of course...and let me tell you, anyone who worries about MINI safety needn't.

 

I"ve never been really worried about front end collisions, it's the rear passengers in rear ends that i'm worried about.

I have to say though, the picture of the car looks like a cartoon. Those cartoon cars that when they die have their wheels to the side and their tongue sticking out.

 

It looks like the MINI is throwing its engine up.

I've never had a concern for my safety in the MINI. Six airbags, crumple zones, rollovervirtualimpossibilites (I made that a 12 syllable word) and after seeing the older "new" MINI crash test against that Ford F150, I was sold. Hummer drivers fair worse than we will in my opinion.
