Tribune Front page

Anyone else see the front page of the Chicago Tribune yesterday? Specifically the article on the bottom, the MINI was ranked in the same category as the Hummmer H3 for fuel consumption, I'm still trying to figure out how that was reasoned.

From what I can tell they are talking about the life of the vehicle. Here's a quote from an article about it:

" Very very interesting. The Hummer H3, with a fuel efficiency of about 9mpg, uses less energy over its lifetime than a VW Golf with a fuel efficiency of 27mpg. There are loads more cars that were on the list. The car with the lowest dust-to-dust cost was the Scion xB (I've never heard of it until today)."

So it's probably not saying that it has high fuel efficiency but that for the life of the vehicle it has lower consumption... meaning people are keeping Hummers until they die... or are expected to. The life expectancy of the vehicle is lowering the consumption.

They used the EPA standards
This guide rates only environmental performance when the vehicle is in use. It does not account for other environmental factors, such as recyclability of the vehicle, or for any other factors that people may consider when choosing a vehicle, such as safety, cost, or driving performance.

Information on this site is based on data that vehicle manufacturers submit to EPA. While EPA makes every effort to assure that these data are complete and accurate, it cannot guarantee this.
Here is a link to the article unfortunately it doesn't have the table provided in the paper.

Yet, one more reason to read the Times.

My theory is that GM advertises in the Tribune. They had to find a way to spin the story in their direction.

Ironically I'm too tal to fit into an H2 without my head leaving a mark on the headliner and my necka nd back getting all cramped up, but I've got a little extra headroom in both MINIs and C6 Z06s
