I like mine. It draws air from the stock intake snorkle which you leave in place when you remove the stock airbox. The new "box" blocks most options for air to enter from the hot engine bay. So it's a semi- or mostly-cold air intake. Since the air comes in to the somewhat open filter area and the intake snorkle isn't sealed to a canister around the filter, you don't have the usual ram-type CAI water through the throttle body worries. The sound is great.....slightly subdued relative to some of the HAI options (K&N, etc), I guess because it's not completely open to the engine bay. The build quality is good and mine fit perfectly.

That price looks good too.

I have had mine for almost 3 years now, also on an 03. It is AFE, but I got it from MOSS with their pipe, but functionally, the same thing.

I clean it regularly and have never had a problem.

again, not the magnum force aFe...but a direct shot from Moss, I don't believe they make this anymore, but I love it and the aFe filter has been on for the full 3 years with cleanings about every 4 months.

Yeah...I got mine from Moss too. Got it for $40 on sale. Don't be crazy and spend more than that. They all do the same thing on the Cooper. Your just paying for the name on this one.

Hey guys, he's not asking about the simple bent tube and filter kit from Moss and others. This one is more of an airbox replacement with a heat shield.

I called Moss and tried to talk to the order taker about the $119 Pipercross power cone filter. He didn't know anything I couldn't already see in the picture on the website. It looked a little cheaply made to me.

No $40 on sale ones at this time.

Yeah, I know that, but the filter is the same....only it uses the OEM intake tube to the TB....and has the addition of the heat shield. I have done temp checks on my care at the track, and feel the heat shield is worthless...and the OEM intake portion used by this kit is not as direct. Granted the differences are not really measurable by feel of the car, but there are other options.

My comments were related to the filter, and the filter only. I think it is a great option, and mine has stood the test of time, over 3 years, and many cleanings..... aFe makes a good product and cleaning products as well. I even have blue oil to re-condition the filter, so I can keep the original color.

Anyone can slap together a tube to fit the TB, even a Silicone extension to the filter with some type of bracing to hold it steady would work...even a home-made section would work....allowing you to just get the filter directly without having to do an aftermarket kit...saving money in the long run, but functionality is the same. With the kit he was talking about, you can just buy the filter, attach it to the OEM intake tube, and not worry about the air box heat shield, and be fine....that would save the most amount of money.....and still have the functionality of a CAI so to speak.

Also am skeptical about the effectiveness of a heat shield. Isn't it just like putting the filter in a box like OEM (and thus restricting airflow?).

Still, not a bad price, and you'll love the sound/throttle response!

I went out and really took a close look at my stock airbox setup for the first time. It doesn't look so bad, it's more of a cold air intake than many of the replacements because all the air comes in from the opening right behind the grill.

Also, as you speed up, the airbox should be pressurized a bit by the inrushing air, helping the airflow to increase.....and it's separated from the engine heat more the the aftermarket ones. Of course, being tightly enclosed by a heavy plastic box, there is little noise from the stock setup. It would seem the most important thing would be to use the filter with the highest flow that still filters well.

Other than the sound, (which could be enough by itself), is there any believeable documentation to prove there is really an increase in hp?

I have one on my Cooper... I tested the seal against the bonnet using baby powder, and after a bit of adjusting, I got a good seal. On the other side, it's sealed by the headlight assembly. Pretty much the only air going in is from the air snorkel.

It sounds a bit more refined than the Promini intake that was on there before, but they make about the same power (which wasn't a huge gain). My baseline dyno, totally stock was around 106hp/108 ft.lbs. With the intake, Borla cat-back and MTH, it was 112/110.

IMHO, it just sounds nicer!

I'm with scobib...the joys of an intake are auditory mainly. There is some improvement in throttle response and slightly better mileage by my calculations.

Once you hit around 4000-4500 rpms that intake growl will make an addict out of you!

I like this one better...no heat shield but it draws air directly from the air tube. I does cost $200 so I have not ordered yet

The stock airbox is still very restrictive due to factory emmisons. Replacing it with a cone filter has dyno proven results. Also, sound = power
