That looks terrible and you have my sympathy, but what do you want us to tell you?

Sorry, never mind. It was a MINI.

so... i was driving home yesterday with a frend following me. stopped at a traffic light, made a right turn, as i took off i got up too 5k rpm on 1st gear then shifted, then all of a sudden my car went to limp mode(so i thought). well i pulled over shut off the car waited a couple minutes. then started it up again, it seemed to be running fine, so i begun to drive again got up to 10mph, then the felt like it had no power, so i pulled over again. then i saw the temp gauge rising rapidly. shut off the car, open the hood saw the expansion tank leakin like crazy. i thought i blew a hose or something, then my frend saw the belt on the pulley all torn up. so my frend went home picked up the truck, towed me home. we pulled off the tire and wheel well. so i noticed half of the crank pulley leaning against the endlink. tried to spin the pulley on the super charger, but that didnt werk.

im guessing that my tensioner gave out and locked everything up. any suggestions??

Looks like the rubber fatigued and tore or one of the pulleys locked up. To diagnose, I would look at the belt tensioner pulley and make sure that it spins freely. Also check that the supercharger spins freely and the idler puller spins freely as well. If the idler pulley has locked up I would replace it with the heavy duty pulley available at Precisionmini.com Sounds like a good time to add an aluminum crank pulley. I have the 2% from m7 and like it very much. Engine revs much quicker and the AC works better. I can send you an install guide if you like.

If you pay for postage I've got an 03 pulley you can have.....
Looks like you will have an easy time removing the old one, as if that's any consolation......
I can't see the tensioner, IMO it diden't fail. The SC does not turn? If so, that's not good. The belt failed, then got under the pulley & took the pulley out. Then the tensioner would hit the SC but not necessarly take it out. There may be some fragments of the belt wound up interfering with the SC pulley locking it up. Lets hope.....

while i see this as an opportunity to go to a light wieght (possibly 2% reduction) pulley - Why not just call BMW road side service, let them take it to a dealer and would think that it would be replaced at no cost?

I was going to post pics...but mine didn't come out as good as yours. Well, at least you have more time to find out how to install those Evo2's.

My old 03 MCS did the same thing at about 18k miles back in 04. Taking off from a red light, normally, and it went into limp mode. I pulled over and shut it off. After starting it again I heard a loud knocking like a rod. I called MINI roadside and they took care of it. The crank, belt and cv boot needed to be replaced. The loud knocking was apparently the belt wacking the cv boot to death.

Ouchie....I have to agree with Bahamabart, time to get a lightened and perhaps 2% crank. I would be willing to bet that would be cheaper than oem 05+ from dealer (lighter than the 02-04s). Stevecars60 made a generous offer. But no matter which route you go, make sure to verify what caused the "action". I hope it was the crank pulley failing due to tensioner. If that superchager doesnt spin that is not good. Had you heard any belt squealing? anything at all in the run up to this? imvho if you heard nothing that smacks of tensioner impact. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

That right there ^^^ is probably the 'action' referred to by hb/w06mcs (or in this case inaction). Belts are good for what, 40K?

IF the supercharger can't be turned by hand, then you have a fubarred supercahrger for sure. The vanes have collided somehow and welded themselves into a mess. I had this exact same problem a year ago. Once the supercharger was replaced, all was well. Hope you get it sorted out soon.

Cheers,

Henry

I know that I am naive. But, isn't this a big, catastrophic failure of some sort? MINI should be ashamed and replace that immediately. I have never seen nor heard of this before; I would think this is out of the ordinary.

You never know - I think it is worth while taking the part to the dealer and talking with a rep.

It still looks like the belt failed, wound up, gathering itself behind the crank pulley, causing the pulley to fail. As you said "the belt has been squealing for almost 9 months". Before all is given up, on the SC, look to see if there is any belt wound up in the SC pulley. After looking at the pics in your gallery, the belt could have wound up in that pulley as well.

I think the alta pulley insturctions sum it up very nicely... A squealing belt is not normal.... I would think a snowball in heXX has a better chance of getting anything out of the dealer. So that behind you, all you can do now is fully insepct the rest of it: tensioner, idler, supercharger... Since you are running a reduction pulley on the supercharger I would take it off and make sure no belt tied up there in the back. If free of belt and still not able to turn that supercharger by hand get somebody else to take a look while you start looking in the marketplace section at some of the superchargers that are in there right now....Best of luck and hopefully this is a cheap lesson in keeping up with the maintenance. I am sure its a lesson I just hope its cheap....

There's a lot of black dust around there in the picture. I would make sure everything is lined-up properly (re: SC pulley). This may or may not have been a factor in the squealing.
