iPod next to the tachometer

I really want to mount my iPod next to the tachometer. I think that mounting it there would be great: I can easily hide the aux input cable, see the tunes playing, and access the iPod controls. Mossmini sells these "FlexPods" that you can use with gauges and iPod nanos:

http://mossmini.com/Shop/ViewProduct...eIndexID=53682

But it only fits nano and it has an extra gauge holder on the left--which I don't need.

Anyone know where I can get something like this that will work with a video iPod???

I like it! I discovered that the product is sourced from NAM sponser CravenSpeed. You might contact them to ask about mounting a different model iPod. The kit is modular and you should be able to remove the gauge pod on the other side if you don't use it. Maybe they'd be willing to sell a kit with just the mount and the Nano holder. I wonder if anyone makes a good analog clock in the standard gauge size. That would would be a nice way to fill in the pod.

They also make a gauge kit for the tach/speedo Nav configuration (which is what I need), but I don't know whether their Nano holder is compatible.

I had an e-mail exchange with Kellen at CravenSpeed:
I did find a great way to mount the Nano cradle vertically onto the tach/speedomter. I put some pics up on the website. This flexpod kit will have to be called the Navo Pod for now because I can't think of anything remotely good to call it. We will sell them for $114.95. This may turn out to be an introductory price since it makes this option the least expensive of the flexpod kits even though it is quite usefull. Previously I had suspected that placing the nano in this position would interfere with the wiper stick on the right of the steering wheel, there is no problem with that at all as you can see in the side view.

As far as the analog clock is concerned, I have found some at this address. I have not tested it but I believe that since it is made along with other 52mm gauges that it is reasonable to belive it will fit our 52mm cup.

There are some variations...

I hope this helps you out. Heather and I will be here to take your order at 888-493-7262.

You'll have to ask them separately about the possibility of mounting other models of iPod. Here is the configuration for Nano with Nav:

Analog clock in a gauge pod would be nice, although this one he references is $89.

Thanks for looking into this. I tried emailing Craven but didn't get a reply.

I think having a clock there would be great. But, in the posted picture, don't you think that that doesn't look like a nano. I think it looks like an iPod video.

I sent my e-mail to NAM user kellen. He had posted a vendor announcement for the NavPod. I haven't tried the phone number.

The picture is definitely of a Nano. Note that the click wheel is almost as wide as the iPod itself.

I spoke with Kellen about three weeks ago - just after Craven announced the Flex Pod on the vendor announcements forum.

I had the very same questions and he did say he'd work out a way to mount an iPod Nano on Nav/Chrono Pak gauges. Looks like a good setup to me.

I saw that one in the "Show your iPod installation" thread. It's one of the best I've seen. DesignIt made it himself. Unfortunately, I am not that talented.

It was always there!

That bracket by DesignIt looks awesome.

We had the answer as to how to mount the iPod with the Nav gauges all along. It was right there but I didn't see it! just turn the bracket over! Have a look...

There is no interference anywhere. It really shouldn't have taken this long to realize. Oh...you are the first to know!!!!!.....The cradle for all other iPod models (except the mini, sorry) is ready to ship! No one else knows yet,its not even up on the site, give me a call and I can hook up one from our very limited first run.

It looks like no one answered your question about holding the video i-Pod. The Cravenspeed Flexpod will take care of that chore for you. We are really stoked about the Flexpod getting runner up for BEST NEW INTERIOR PRODUCT at the recent SEMA show in Las Vegas. out of 1,400 entries, 33 were awarded prizes and the Flexpod is among those! check out the website at <a href="http://www.cravenspeed.com" You don't even have to have a gauge on the other side. target="_blank">www.cravenspeed.com We have Cravenspeed dealers all over the US that will be happy to help you out with selection and installation. Loren:

I was the first person to approach Cravenspeed about the possibility of using the Flexpod mount on the Navi/Chrono-pak cluster and also the first to purchase the Flexpod Navi, directly from your company. Overall, I like the concept but the implementation is less than ideal. There are several issues that need attention. I discussed the suggestions with Kellen, but he indicated that there are no intentions to modify the design; this is rather disappointing. I'm not sure if he passed my comments on to you, or not, so here they are...

The concerns are:
  • The mount should be re-located to the left side of the instrument cluster. On the right side it blocks 75% of the driver's right-side air vent. On the left side of the cluster, it would not block the left air vent, at all.
  • The bracket, if used on the right side, needs to be angled towards the driver maybe 10-15°. For MINI's that have a sunroof, during the day, there's a lot of glare in the iPod's display, which makes the display nearly unreadable without moving one's head about a foot to the right.
  • The current 5th generation video iPods are very thin. The Flexpod's cradle is way too deep and should be supplied with a variety of felt pads for the sides and back of the cradle. Otherwise, the iPod will be very loose in the cradle and it will get scratched in just a few miles of driving.
I would be very interested in evaluating the updated, more usable, version of the Flexpod Navi.

Thanks,
=Adam=

I was surfing some old threads and I came across this one. I have an update, not all of it is fresh news;

-The Bracket Z for the Nav and Chrono Package is currently available to be attached on either the right or left side, either high or low.

-The iPod cradle had been updated to better accommodate the iPhone, specifically the new 3GS model.

-For those with the chrono pak the Bracket Zs can be great for providing a safe and easy moutning option for your portable GPS. We have module for the Garmin, TomTom, and Magellan.

Thanks for the suggestion AntiqueCarNut!
