R50/53 Surprise Great Motoring Shoe!
Surprise Great Motoring Shoe!
Got a pair of Converse All Stars this week. (Actually on sale at Kohl's for about $30). Anyway, just supposed to be an everyday kickin' around shoe and I was amazed how well they felt driving the MINI.
Very narrow cut and thin sole helps you really feel the pedals! Unbelieveable.
You might want to check them out. Here's the type I happened on:

Looks like many other styles would also double as a motoring shoe.
Motor on.

Around here, that's the shoe the teenage boys wear for skateboarding. Very popular. I guess the reason they are popular for skateboarding (feel the board, light fit) is what would make them a good driving shoe.

I just picked up a pair of these RBK Evolution's for $20. So far I'm impressed with them. They are very light and feel great! I got a deal through Finishline, they retail for like $70.

Piloti makes touring shoes, without Nomex or other fireproof linings. Narrow enough to fit between the throttle and brake, rounded heels. Looks like easy to wear around out of the car too.

the key difference is the heel. converse is close to a 90 degree
where as the Piloti's have a rounded heel. that's a huge difference
in how the foot pivots. accurate input with less control.
i use the Piloti G16's in blue as posted above.

i tried those Puma's last year.... they were too narrow and imho do
not work well as driving shoes. perhaps for someone with big
feet might work. im a size 9 (9.5 on piloti's) and would literally
slip off the pedal when i do heel and toe (both traditional pedals
and the organ MCS pedals).
oh well....
I've got a pair of Puma Romas, originally intended for casual wear, that have proven not only among the most comfortable walking shoes I've ever owned, but pretty good driving shoes, too (probably for the same reasons as the Converse.

Don't know if I'd wear them to the track...but for the everyday commute and long lunches here and there for some spirited driving on twisty roads, well...

i had to get these two pairs for driving and both are equally awesome

Adidas AdiRacers, Puma Speedcats or Puma KartKat II's for me. Also, I've found that while Nike Frees aren't as narrow as most driving shoes, they allow enough flexibility to comfortably heel-toe and fit between pedals.
They are a fantastic shoe, but they're not new. They've been out for a few years iirc.

I'll go with the Chucks any day. Once they're broken in (i.e. worn out) you can feel a small pebble underfoot. Easily feel the brake pedal as you're blipping the gas. If I was on track a couple dozen times a year I might consider the piloti though.
I'm glad this thread came up. I wear a 13E, and am having serious problems with my foot fitting between the brake pedal and the "hump". It's tough to press the gas without my foot getting caught on the brake pedal, so a slimmer shoe would help a lot.
