Track Days at Reno-Fernley & Thunderhill in August
Sure hope the track is nice...
I hope the track is nice.....
IMHO...Frenley is one of the worst overgrown, underplanned, towns in the state! A couple of gas stations and + 3 wannabe casinos and a whole bunch of houses built on what was once nice farmlands...
had to do a commute from Reno for about a year...whew...glad that ended!
Edit: Oh...forgot about the industrial parks and blowing sand...put a good coat of wax on before you go and pray for no wind!

The track is recently renovated and improved. I had a great time up there last Monday. It's like zooming around on the moon.
As for accomodations, the hotels in Reno are far superior to anything in Fernley. 45 minutes door-to-door from the Atlantis. Gates open at 7.
It won't do any good to pray for no wind. There is always wind. The water truck keeps the dust down pretty well, but make sure your shade structure is well anchored. RFR provides 5 gallon pails half full of cement with a rebar hoop for just this reason.

I usually made it in about 45 mi on I-80 in a turbo Audi A4 Quattro which was complely sandblasted. Uggh and then they were fixing the roads. Never going over the posted speed limit either. it turns to 70 mph just outside of Reno!
Sounds and looks (from your pics) like a nice track...Now if I could only find a large enough zip lock bag to keep the mini in...
Just finished the whole shebang...from claying to buffing with a PC orbital and waxing....Hmmm...I wonder how my Honda Element would do on the track!

WIND..I live in NW Reno...windy city! NOTHING COMPARED TO FERNLEY...
BTW: IF YOU HAVE A RADAR DETECTOR...Big time trap around Derby Dam area (Not even 5 mph over...I warn you)! Radar is thick as the butterfly swarms we had last year out there...Nice yellow gook all over the car every day! I just set my cruise control at 69mph in the 70mph zones.... There also seems to be that small town "attitude" towards out of area plates! Like a different planet!
EDIT: Forgot: Save about 15 minutes and try the Nugget just off I-80 in Sparks just past Reno. Good food too! Ask to stay in the new tower
Have Fun..
Jeff
Nice to hear from a local! Thanks for the tips. I used to go over to the Nugget for the Oyster Pan Roast until they opened the seafood bar at the Atlantis. True, the Nugget is closer but I'm comped at Atlantis and besides, I like their poker room.
One of their dealers used to deal to me when I was first learning Hold 'Em at the Oaks Club in Oakland and one is a descendant of Tom Mann of Mann's No. 10 Saloon in Deadwood where Wild Bill was shot.
Sad Arthur and I came through the butterfly migration last spring on our inaugural road trip back from Chicago when he was brand new . . . what a sea of goo!
In my experience, there's no way to keep the dings off the car if you track it, so it then becomes a question of whether you just want to admire the wax job (nothing wrong with that) or drive the **** out of it and accept the inevitable dings as badges of honor. I am definitely of the second persuasion.

I bet....(actually I never bet...living here and all)

I have never seen that many butterflies in my life...and it lasted all month too!...By the time it reached Reno, it had dimished...but was still ugly... Had to pressure wash the A/C condenser in the Audi daily or it caked up!Did you have the pleasure of driving thru the Morman Cricket invasion a little further east? Looks like the entire road is moving...then you hear CRUNCH CRUNCH...Uggghhhh...why do I live here? (NO STATE INCOME TAX COMES TO MIND!
