Cooper S without a Scoop?

I saw a beautiful CR/W today...chromed out, custom rims, etc. It had the S badges and the signature body shape but no scoop on the bonnet. It looked to be a few years old maybe. Were Ss made without scoops in earlier models or

I didn't check the tail pipes but they could have been switched out, too. Come to think of it, when I peeked in the window I'm certain I saw a 6-spd manual. More

If you have a water to air IC

you don't need the scoop.

No, as a water->air will generally have a front mounted heat exchanger, whereas the stock air->air intercooler sits on top of the engine and is cooled by air going into the scoop.

Technical question--

Is the scoop/hole the air-source for the SC compressor, or is it to provide cooling for some of the SC's hotter parts? I've been telling friends it's the air-sucker for the compressor/carb system, but that's just been a good guess so far.

My MCS is on a boat! Somewhere! Getting the one-month-out can't-wait crazies! First big road trip (departing late August) is in the final planning stages!

Thanks! --doug

the scoop is mostly for directing air over the intercooler, which cools the charge air. The air that goes into your intake tract comes from the hole on top of the radiator support and is fed by air entering through the front grille.

edit: this is what I'm talking about. I have the HAI so it won't look exactly like that, but you get the idea.

I know you said to pay no attention to your HAI but I can't stop looking at it!

Thanks for the update on what the hood-hole is about. I looked up "intercooler" on Wikipedia.com to get a more long-winded version of why/how one cools supercharger air, and there's a picture of a Mini on the page!

I wouldn't say I don't like the scoop, but I love the hood lines of the Cooper... much cleaner lines than my 'S'. I think having the sleeper look of an S without the hood scoop would be appealing to some, and maybe myself included.

I totally agree! It's not that I don't like the scoop, I just love how a Cooper looks. I HAD to have a supercharger though...heh.

If you do get the water to air intercooler, does the cooper hood have enough clearance?

Well, if you have a BRG and want to trade BONNETS, then

So if I put an S hood on my cooper, will it give me 50 extra HP?

pretty sure there would be clearance issues....but maybe the new IC setup would help that.

lots of Subaru guys do a FMIC painted black and swap hoods from a non-turbo car. Some go so far as to switch badging to make it look like a non-performance car. The ultimate sleeper. Do the same to a wagon like I have and nobody will know what's going on. A million Outbacks on the road....nobody is looking at it thinking "I wonder if it has a Cosworth longblock, GT35R and 500whp"

Well, my step-mother's MINI is a Cooper S, and apparently you can choose whether or not to have the S logo added. So she has an S, but it just says Cooper on the back. So maybe this person has a Cooper and decided to order S logos to be sneaky, lol...

which? a Cosworth motor? my wagon? or a sleeper? Mine's not all three ya know

My buddy does have a Cosworth motor in his garage...awaiting install however. I do have pics to share. One of only a handful of fully built longblocks Cosworth made for Subaru's - they found it to be cost prohibitive to do the full motor, so switched focus to the heads alone. This thing is good for 800hp+ at the crank and will spin to 10,500 rpm safely. All in a nice, tidy, 2.5L boxer four cylinder
