15.3 Mpg !!!!!

Yes, that's what I averaged today at Phil Wicks Driving Academy at Summit Point , WV.

What a fun day, very tiring, but very fun! What I learned most today was that my idea of a good line through the track and the instructors idea of a good line were quite different!! Of course, he was right! The other thing that I learned was that driving smoother, though sometimes feels slower, actually made me faster! By my last track session, I was hitting 100 mph on the back stretch and my driving around the corners was substantially faster than when I tried to hammer my was through the first time (w/o instructor).

I also learned why my first performance mod will be a 22mm rear bar, set to the middle position. Though I found I could rotate the car a little bit, ultimately I understeered when pushing hard.

Watched the North American Mini Cooper Challenge races there as well, and got to see Randy Webb's twin charged car dominate the first race and most of the second. His car was a treat to see as well as hear (it had by far the best exhaust note of the racers).

All in all a very busy day. It's got me hooked to track driving (this was my first time). Now I want to go out and buy a used basic MCS and start building a track car......

Sounds like a lot of fun.
By the way, That's about the same mileage I get all the time.

Davisflyer,

Glad you had some fun. Nevermind building a track MINI, just buy Randy's Track mule. (is it still for sale??)

I think I've gotten about 14 or 15 mpg before but it was on the track running lap after lap (max speed about 105) all day long.

Most of the time when I average in driving to and from the track I get about 20mpg.

Bring some extra gas in a tank in case you start to run a bit low at the end of the day or fill gas at lunch time.

That's great gas mileage! When I've been on the track, I get about 7-8 mpg---, but that's what I expected. My combined city/h'way consumption is about 17-18 mpg, and city alone is 14-15 mpg. I guess that the rate of fuel consumption is inversely proportional to the "foot factor", i.e., some measure of the difference between accelerator position at idle in neutral and accelerator position in the various gears throughtout the period of "stress " (whew...)---

Anyone racing a SmartCar?

When I was at Phil Wicks in St. Louis I got about 16 mpg on the track. Average speed: 58 mph. Top Speed: 105 mph at the rev limiter in 4th (not enough time to change to 5th)
