Any way to just crack the windows in this car

If I just crack the window, as soon as I open the door, it lowers the window more, then when I close it, it doesn't put it back up, and I end up with the window open about an inch. I know about the normal lower/close behavior when closing the door, but it makes absolutely no sense that it lowers it when it's already cracked. I also noticed when I was trying to put the window back up with the door open, it would put it up a little then right back down. Either way, I could never get it to leave it just cracked open. The only reason I even wanted it open was because even though I closed my window (I'm pretty sure) all the way last night, it left it cracked and I got rain in the car. Is this normal behavior?

Maybe you just need to reset the window motor.

To reset the function:

1) Turn on car
2) lower and raise BOTH windows with the toggle switches.
3) Once both windows are up, press and hold BOTH window toggle switches for no less than 10 seconds.
4) test. Your glass should raise and drop 1/4 of an inch when closing/opening the doors.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no that didn't work. After performing those steps, and with the windows cracked, it still displayed the same behavior. It kind of works as though the window programmers think the driver is too stupid to notice a cracked open window. If the window is open more than about an inch, nothing happens when the door is open, but if less than 1 inch, it opens to 1 inch and stays there. As such, I can't understand how it was cracked enough last night to let in rain, but yet it did.

I just went out to my MINI, got in and closed the door. Then I positioned the window cracked open barely below the weather seal. When I opened and closed the door the window stayed in the original slightly cracked open position.

I guess that's the way it's supposed to work.

guess:

the amount it lowers and raises with the door is a fixed distance, rather than a point it lowers to. i.e: it drops the window 1 inch.

when you crack your window, it is still within the range the door recognizes as "closed", so it lowers the window by the standard 1"

now, the window is lowered more than it usually is by the automatic lowering. so when you close the door, the sensor thinks "the window is not where I would have left it, so this guy must have lowered his own window". So it leaves it alone.

My wife's '05 and my '06 both behave like swartzentruber describes. I have given up trying to crack the windows. A couple of weeks ago, my son was in the passenger seat and cracked his window - when we got out, the dumb thing thing dropped down another couple of inches. Since there is no rain gutter to speak of, leaving the windows cracked on a rainy day will result in a wet seat anyway. On a non-rainy day, I just leave the sunroof cracked.
