What year do you have and are you sure you need to remove it to install the checkered board? I know with my factory checkered board I didn't have to remove the base because there was no square there. I think to remove the base of the antenna you have to go from the inside above the headliner.
Hi Ken,
the headliner is easy to pull down without making it dirty?
where do I grab to get underneath it?
or do I somehow pull out the rubber gasket around the rear hatch and go in from there, any tips on how you went about it?

On my black '03, I just unscrewed the antenna and wiggled the little black base a little and it popped right off. Then you can checker the spot and put the base right back on, nice clean look.

There are some notes on my web:

These may help you. There are also other posts if you search for XM antenna base.
good luck,

The headliner didnt get dirty, but did wrinkle. The wrinkles smoothed out in a day or so. You do need to pull the black rubber weatherstrip off a bit, and the vertical gray posts on either side (between the hatch and rear windows). When you pull off the weatherstrip, you'll almost be able to see where the antenna nut is up in the roof.
Good luck and -- don't be afraid to pull!

is there an information page somewhere?
yikes!now I dont know which is correct.
The antenna is not an xm, i know this. It is just a regular small oval, with the thinnest small spiral stick attached to it.
I was thinking maybe a heat gun, like when I used it on the cooper letters on the boot, but I am not sure whether or not it is just stuck or screwed. For some reason, Ithink it may be screwed. It wiggles but doesnt come off, that would indicate to me another form of attachment.
Is there a thread that shows all the different kinds of antennas and their methods of attachment?
thanks,
Stacy
