Proposed AZ law that would outlaw autocross, rallycross etc.

There’s a bill about to be introduced in the Arizona Senate that would effectively outlaw any automotive competition in that state not held at an existing racetrack (click here for story). Although the bill appears to be aimed at a proposed Champ Car street race in Phoenix, the effects would be felt much farther down the motorsports food chain.

Thoughts?

Yet another example of the "Daytona mafia" trying to strengthen its monopoly of american motorsports. Should note that the owners of Champcar are considering pursuing leagle action against NASCAR.

To get a racecar below 90 db is ridiculous. Being the Mini is one of the loudest racecars in it's class, this would be a huge issue.

Haven't read that article yet, but it all over the internet.

Autocross has lots of classes of vehicles in it, from very prepped race cars to daily drivers. Personally I'd be fine as I am still stock, but the guy who has the BSP or SM (very prepped) car would be up the creek without a paddle. We're talking cars that aren't street legal any longer, no tags etc. Built to purpose for autocross.

My concern with this is, as an autocrosser (albeit, not in Arizona), that if this passes in AZ, what is there to say that other states won't follow suit? I enjoy autocrossing a whole lot, and would hate to see it killed off by NASCAR wanting to stifle perceived competition (in the form of road races like.. the San Jose GP, etc.) Unintended side effects of trying to prevent a street race.

I'd be pretty unhappy if I lived in Arizona and this passed, though it might prove to be unenforceable without the testing guidelines included in the verbiage.

Lets not forget that the France's also own Grand Am and Rolex series.

Got it. It looks like a squabble between race sponsor vice whats good for the city. My bet is it will go where the money goes (like into the city coffers).

Yup, but isn't that just one series - GrandAm Rolex? Regardless, it's useful to dilute interest and sponsorship associated with endurance sportscar racing. And lets not forget their support of tony george and the irl. All this while the Frances and Nascar march on. With a potential merger in the works, the battle lines may change.
