If I buy 17" Flik Wasps, Can I use my OEM Run Flats?
If I buy 17" Flik Wasps, Can I use my OEM Run Flats?
Or actually, what do I need to look for in a rim to make sure it would fit on the stock 17" Run Flats? Goodyear version by the way
thanks!
thanks!
cool
arent the stock S-Lites 17x7.5 ? and the Flik Wasps are 17x7 ?
and the offset or whatever its called, stock is 48 i think, and the wasps are 42, does that mean Ill need to do anything special ?

The FLIK Wasps with 205/45-17 runflats should be OK assuming a) they are 17" and b) they are within the 7" to 8.5" width range. Depending on their offset and whether you are lowered, you may need to be careful about wheel/tire width selection or you may need to do some dremmeling.
The Wasps require a hub-centric ring. The hub of the brake disk is smaller than the hole for it in the wheel. I'm not sure on the size, because mine came with the rings and I didn't have to find them. Do a search on "hub centric" and I'm sure you'll find all the info you need.
I have an 03 MCS with 100% stock suspension and had absolutely no rubbing issues until I switched to the 10mm wider non run-flats. I now have 215s on, and very occasionally, with multiple passengers and a big bump, I'll hear a slight rub. Not enough to worry about.

I thought runflat tires require rims that have special "bumps" in them (i.e. you can use non-runflat tires on runflat rims, but not runflat tires on non-runflat rims). I could very well be wrong, as it seems I probably am if many of you have run runflats on aftermarket rims, but thought I'd mention what I'd heard...

I think it depends on the runflat system. MINIs use a system that senses the change in the rotation speed caused by a drop in pressure, so the wheel and tire combination has no effect on the sensors, and MINI wheels have no built-in sensors.

I have heard the same things about runflats though, that they depend on a extra little lip on the inside part of the wheel to lock in the sidewall. I've seen it too when I was getting the runflats taken off my S-Lites. I don't know if all runflats need this or not though. If you ever find out be sure to post it, I'm sure others would want to know too.
Runflat tires don't require pressure to work, correct.
However, I believe it's a US law that cars sold with runflats as OEM tires MUST have a flat tire sensor system so that drivers won't happily drive on their punctured runflat tires indefinately. That is what I was talking about. If you get a puncture and lose pressure in your tire, a light comes on in the dash and there is an audible alarm to let you know that you need to get your tire fixed or replaced.
Some of these systems have pressure sensors. MINI's doesn't. The MINI flat tire alarm works by sensing a change in the rotation speed of the wheel.

Okay, that makes more sense then. It almost seems like you just took some weird tangent or misread something.
So, to sum things up.
Aftermarket rims will not affect the tire pressure monitoring system (which might be required with runflats by US law).
Run flat tires may require a special type of rim to be used (one with a locking bead/ledge). This one I don't think anyone specifically can verify, maybe Alex @ Tire Rack might know more about it.
