Aero Kit, getting edge to match arches.
My car is having a new rear aero kit bimper skin installed. The original I was told was one of the factory painted ones. It got cracked
The body shop is concerned with trying to match the black edge texture as the first one did. I got the aerokit install instructions which spec a MINI part # for a black structured paint, MINI of Sterling says it doens't exist?
They have a tech from the paint company coming out today to put his 2 cents in.
Those of you who've had aerokits installed, did your body shop have a issue matching the black textured finish from the plastic arches on the edge of the rear aero bumper and the back edge of the side skirt?
Thanks in advance.
Mark

That'll come next.
The body shop had a tech coming by today from the paint manfacturer... I left a message for the parts manager at Sterling Wed eve. As of Thur eve no call back yet.
I'll probably approach Classic tomorrow. They seem to most have their act together. REALOEM didn't have paint...

Tate told me they had no idea how to do it ..... because they'd never done it before ..... because ..... ready for it? ..... "they all come with that textured black plastic."
After that boost of confidence I decided to take my business elsewhere. I took it to a reputable local shop that said "no problem, we have a guy who knows how to do that." Two days later they called me asking if I got any instructions with the parts (I ordered them from Classic) ..... I took them a copy of the official MINI instructions and pointed out the paint bit, etc, and they said "ah, no problem, now we know what to do." So, I picked it up a couple days later and the black painted area was almost glossy. I reminded the guy I'd told him it had to match the texture on the wheel arches and was told "yeah, I know, but that's the best we can do." Further conversation was not fruitful and I'm now trying to decide on a shop to fix the problem.....or maybe I'll just have the arches painted to match.....

I'm looking for a matte black paint to do mine. I don't want glossy or body color, but I want to be able to wax the finish. I have asked several dealers about the finish, but they're not saying. I saw an almost perfect match on a car at Neillo in Sacramento, but was never able to get a paint code.

My body shop (owned by a good friend) took three attempts to get the right look. I'm not sure how he got the "textured" look but I would guess he deliberately produced "orange peel" or shot the paint fairly dry so it "splattered" a little to produce the right finish. He then painted flat black over the top. It is almost indistiguishable from the factory finish. BTW the MINI structured paint is only available in Europe.
I read somwhere that you can buy an aerosol can of textured paint that is used for interior trim. I don't have any more info than that.

There is a textured paint for this application. I don't have the memo handy but if you want i can dig it up, but just as important as the paint you use is also the technique it is painted. If you spay it too close to the suface you will get that glossy finish that you spoke of. I believe the coorect distance is roughly 18" from the surface to get the flat black look. The better way to do it is just let us order a prepainted side skirt for you from the factory. It takes about four weeks but it is worth it. Nobody cna paint it to match the factory paint except the factory. Call us @ 440-205-6404 or email us @ bmwparts@driveclassic.com
