Need Help

Hi

I ordered a Mini cooper s 2006 Manual and I wanted to stick an intake in to it. I need help on picking the right one I don't want the John Cooper made by mini because I just dont want to spend $450 plus installation and it requires an update that coast $180. I found the K&N Typhoon intake but I hear that K&N makes great filters, but not so much the intake itsleft (not sure if thats true) Please help me out. I hope my new mini will be a blast!

Can't recommend any intakes for your MCS, but if you are around this afternoon there will be a Chicago MINI Club hangout at the Culvers in Buffalo Grove. You can probably get lots of opinions there, and I suspect there may be one or two new/used ones for sale.. More info here

What does any one think about the K&N typhoon intake. I heard that K&N don't make great intakes, but good filters?????

I have an Alta intake and I recommend it as well. It has a nice low growl that compliments the wind of the supercharger.

i have the Alta...the dripping oily mess cone. they have no quality
control. i recommend Pilo. i had it before and zero issues.

don't spend a fortune on CAI. they're pretty much all the same other
than the element itself and if the back plastic wall is removed or not.

I've heard good things about the K&N euro version, not so much about the US version. I have and love my ALTA (also reliable some have passed 100k miles of use already), also I've heard good things about the Webb HDI, and Webb Motorsport throughly tests their products before seeling them. Another option you may like if going the K&N route is doing an HAI. I along with several others have done the install ourselves and would be more than willing to give you a hand with the install (can be done in as little as .5 hour, most take about 1 full hour). Hope this helps fill you in on some of the options, I'll see if I can post a video of mine soon.

Thanks for all the advice I love the sound of intakes at high RPMs. My friend put an intake on a V6 accord and it sounds like he has pipes on there. Im probably going to go with the Alta or K&N? I also have a question what is the Fuel Requirement on the mini does it run on 91 octane fuel and above? And does the remote come standard with the electric door opening or do you need the accessory security system???

premium gas on MCS. 91 or higher (93 in mine). the remote is standard and don't need the security system for the powered locks and remote open/close for windows, sunroof. i think you need to get it programmed though unless it came like that from the dealer like mine.

Does anyone know if it is a warranty void with Mini if you put an aftermarket intake and you install it yourself? Because I called mini and they told me that the dealer would have to prove to me that my intake created some problem and in that case they would not cover that. I bought the driving lights and am going to be installing them myself. I think its stupid to pay 400 just for installing driving lights and 400 for the lights, and spending 800 on two driving lights.

First of, I've had the HAI, and an Alta, and loved them both. A used Alta is a good deal IMO.

When it comes to an install, and dealership info. If you want I would be more than happy to show you how to install, and uninstall the intake (it's rather easy once you see it from start to finish), and then if you have any qualms about taking it in, you can just remove the intake prior to service

First, do not believe any of the marketing hype on HP claims from anyone on CAIs. Caveat Emptor. GO read the thread on CAI testing from Motoring Underground and you will find more realistic numbers.

Second, in theory, ANY aftermarket part you add, if it cause problems elsewhere in the car, MINI will not cover. For example if you add the lights and it screws up the electrics, they will not fix it free.

More seriously, they can get nasty about it if they want to. See https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=49580 If you think you can use the MM act to beat BMW, think twice

I would never put in anything less than 91, and I personally run 93 whenever posssible. The car will come with a key that will lock and unlock the doors; it car open windows/sunroof but you have to ask the dealer to activate the feature, many will do it for free at purchase or a service visit (used to always be that way, but not everyone knew and several interiors were ruined by rain so BMW changed the way the MINIs leave the factory to prevent unintended opening). All that w/out the security system. I've had a ton of warranty work done unrelated to the intake without issue (mostly at Knauz) I also have heard Patrick is also very logical about providing service under warranty to cars with mods. But your best bet is call them up and ask a SA or tech.

So i don't understand the window thing when it can open windows? the remote? So if your car is standing and its turned off and your windows are rolled down and the lock it with the remote the windows should close, after your dealer modifies it?????

I'm also wondering about the Alta intake becuase I see that the filter is made kind of a sponge/foam material so how does that work when it rains and does it take more or less air???

you just press and hold the unlock button and it will open the windows and
sunroof or close it if you press and hold the lock button. (if so programmed).

the filter is dry even in the rain so you don't need to worry about it
getting wet.

Just for clarity's sake, the JCW intake does not require any software upgrades and can be installed a la DIY.

I wiill try and see if I can get my dealer to program the remote and I'm probably going to go with an Alta intake on there. How much HP does the Alpa give you because I've heard the the K&N typhonn gives you from 5-15???

Im not going to put in the JCW intake because I think that for $450 dollars its not worth it for only 5 HP!!

I think ALTA claims up to 8 hp; most any will likely give you 5hp, but the butt dyno has been very pleased with the ALTA.
