I have found that a lot of my passengers close the door when they are exiting my MINI by pushing on the window! How do I get them to push on the door and not the window without sounding like someone who loves their MINI too much?

I have thought of putting an car equivalent of the "No Step" signs used on planes, but it's a little over the top. Has anyone else dealt with this problem?

Eek! I guess I'm glad I don't have more passengers. I'll have to watch next time.

Happens to me...probably happens to us all. I tend to do it myself. So, I think you're fighting an uphill battle here. People are just used to pushing the window frame to close a door, and when there's no frame, they push the glass. The door itself is kind of short for most average-height people to reach down and push.

I actually much prefer my MINI's doors with the windows rolled down. I think they look really cool without the frame and without rather flimsy looking piece of glass sticking up out of the door. So, in the summer, I intend on keeping the windows down as often as possible...and then passengers will HAVE to push the door and not the glass!

My girlfriend is on the verge of dumping because I nag her everytime I see her do it.

Perhaps, a mild electrical shock would work everytime they touch that part of the window..

You could do like a limo driver and ask them to stay seated and get out and open the door for them...or just get used to it....

Subtle
-------
"I love the openess the large windows on the MINI provide, but they sure are hard to keep free of fingerprints."

Informative
-------------
"Have I told you about the windows in the MINI? They are frameless and automatically dip and rise when the car door is open. The only drawback is that they are more fragil when the car door is open. I have to always remember to push the door shut and not push on the windows."

Direct but Polite
------------------
"When you exit the car, please close the door by pushing on the door, not the glass."

Direct
------
"Close the door by pushing on the door handle."

Total Conflict Avoidance
--------------------------

I KNOW! I hate that! ARG! But I never, EVER, close the door myself by the window!!!! I usually watch the person and if I see that they might reach for the window, I quickly tell them. It usually works....

Funny, I tell people to use anything BUT the door itself. The last thing in the world I want is fingerprints. I usually tell them to palm the door handle and push, or swing it shut via the inside edge of the open door. Personally I use the window every day to close my door. The door is so heavy even a minor nudge sends it slamming shut. So I just nudge it with my palm on the lowest edge of the window. No problems. But I can see issues if you tried to use the glass at any point other than the lowest edge next to the door.

I usually use the trim between the door and the window. That way, no fingerprints on either, and it's easier to reach than the handle.

Ummm yeah the other day my best friend got out of the car and when she closed it, it didn't close all the way. So rather than OPENING IT AGAIN like a normal person, she closed it with her hip. Like totally bashed it with her BONY-*** HIP!!!!

(Now if there had been a problem with the door....well lets just say she might be missing an arm right now....)

I have been catching myself doing this!
I do make a point of pushing all the way at the bottom of the glass, by the molding, so I'm on the most "secure" (wiggle-free ) part of the glass.

I've noticed that people tend to SLAM car doors. I guess a hold over from closing doors on domestics with oversized weatherstripping, (the only way to keep the wistles out of them ). I just tell them on exiting to "close the door gently". They always take hold of the door hangle then and pay attention to what they're doing.

gotta carry some windex in your boot to get rid of the paw prints from people touching the windows. Spray them while you're at it, teach them not to touch the glass!!

Aside from the electric shock idea or not having passengers at all unless they sign a waiver, I like the "Limo Driver" technique. There are a couple pluses here: Passengers don't try to rip your door handle off trying to figure out how to open it and get out- ugh!! And as others have said, no co-pilot smudges and you get to kiss up and be seen as a very polite MINI owner!

Sheesh, why do they ALWAYS push the TOP of the glass???

I had never seen anybody close the doors of my MINI by pusing on the window until I took it to the car wash last week. Two of the flunkies who work there did that, I cringed and spoke to them about it.

As for slamming the doors, with my MINI you kind of have to. If you don't give the doors a good push (or pull) they don't close all the way.

Most of my passengers know that my car is worth more to me than their life, and I've already disclosed my requirements for them being priveliged to be riding in my freshly cleaned vehicle. New passengers get the verbal contract:

"you will never touch my stereo, or CD's without my immediate approval and directions. You will keep your clean shoes only on the floormats, and your arms under control at your side. You will open the door with only the doorhandle, you will close the door with only the trim piece between the body and glass. Fingerprints will not be left, or I will use them to frame you in a crime. Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in a penalty in which I see fit."

    Cheers
    Ryan
