I am about to order my mini cooper. I don't want the dsc or teh fog lamp, ( becasue I want to get rally lights... the dilemma is that I will have 3 empty toggle switches that way... argh and there so groovy that I wnat a full row, i'm actually considerign buyign the fog lamps just to get another one... so I pose this questions,, is there a way to order or get the row of toggle switches for replacement.. I heard teh uk one has teh full set of them.. teh dealer told me you can't buythem seprate because teh toggle are all together.. any suggestions on what I can do.. if I can order a full set of toggles then I'd rather do that, so if you know of a dealer please let me know I have yet to see these anywhere.

That's why I got the fogs. I know, I'm just a BMW pawn...

you can order a full row of toggles, it's not cheap though!

Don't know how handy you are but this may be an option for you:
I saw a post, maybe on MINI2.com, where the guy had wired up the rear fog-lights to a toggle switch in the row. He found an almost identical switch at Radio Crap (Radio Shack) and pulled the switch panel, and drilled a hole for the new switch.
Since my rear fog lights are already jumpered to my brake lights, I was actually thinking about doing the extra switch, but wiring it up to a vibrator under the passenger seat.

As if rides in the MINI aren't thrilling enough.

Do you have any idea where you can get the toggles ordered from? the us version does have rear fogs (as far as i've seen) so that isn't an option for me otherwise I'd think about it. so

chollomo,

Welcome to MCO!

Without DSC and fogs, you will be missing only two switches on a US model (the DSC gets replaced by ASC - all season traction control).

mikeythemini over on MINI2.com has been selling the complete Euro toggle panels to people in the US. I think they were about $130, but don't hold me to that. The Euro panel adds a rear fog light switch which will not work on a US car, but fills the hole. The toggle panels are available with either DSC or ASC toggles.

Also, fogs and rally lights are for very different purposes. You might consider getting both. Fogs have a low cut-off and illuminate the near road surface in poor visibility. The factory rally lights are basically additional high beams. The car can have both.

As a side note: there is a grassroots effort to get MINI USA to allow the rear fog lights to be activated (it's just a missing computer code once you have the Euro toggles). Search the forums on this site for more info (keywords: rear fogs). There's even an online petition you'll find.

Best of luck,

James

But only on the S, not the Cooper.

You guys are wrong about the rear fog lights not working. Go take your's apart and look. Everythings in there including the bulb. You may have to re-wire, or even run your own, but if you want you CAN get the rear fogs to work.

Your're right! I didn't know that. Thanks for the correction.

True to a point. All of the parts are indeed there. The the circuitry and computer behind the toggle on a US Spec will not allow you to just buy the full set of toggles from the UK, install that panel, and voila expect to have enabled the rear fogs.

Until MINIUSA changes the programming, you need to do some creative wiring in order to enable the rear fogs.

*This is the over-simplified, short answer!

orbhot,

I've invested the three hours it takes to read/review all the rear fog threads here on MCO and on MINI2. Many have been very deep into the car trying to sort this out. I am correct in my statement above that merely installing the Euro toggles will not make the rear fogs work. You are correct that all the bulbs, sockets, wiring, etc are there; so the toggle switch appears to be the only missing hardware. But the BC1 (body control 1) computer is not programmed for rear fogs on US models. So to make them work as rear fogs, from the toggle panel, would require bypassing the BC1 and a lot of work, including some circuit design, rewiring, and cutting into the factory harness. Most of us would like to avoid that and convince MINI USA that this is a safety issue and that they should release the proper codes to US dealers for those owners who want the function. If you are really interested, I would recommend reading all the related threads.

Sorry for straying from your original topic chollomo.

Cheers,

James

no probem but thank for the tip, damn I was excited that teh acs was goign to replace it oh well... Is it just me or is mini2.com down it jsut keep sgiving me a blank screen, I wantto go see if that guy is still selling them. anotehr qestion half on topic.. if you guys have seen the back of teh toggles,, coudl I say wire anything up to them likie a noral switch, cause i'd hook up my rallies to a blank switch.. VA wont allow more than 4 main lights ( including fogs) facing forward and one at once, so the rallies have to be on a seperate switch anyway. and keep the suggestions for for toggle replacements comming in I need to know because I have a time constraint on when I can order my mini otehre wise wait 4 months argh... tahnks for the advice so far though.

I ordered the full toggle set from Mikethemini on MINI2.COM. Cost runs from $120-$130 including shipping, depending on the exchange rate of the day.
I was very pleased with the transaction.

If you are ordering for an ASC equipped MINI instead of DSC, specify that, because it is a different part number.

See ya,
JS

It's not you; word is MINI2 is having server probs and is down.

I've seen pictures of the toggle panel disassembled and the toggles themselves are not switches at all. Each toggle is just an actuator that presses against membrane switches that are all on a common circuit board. Supposedly the circuit provides a single wire ground signal to the BC1 when the light toggles are actuated. So to use one of the toggles for switching lights directly will require circuit board level modifications and some circuit design.

When MINI2 comes back up, search to find the thread on the garage door opener toggle. Some guy actually wired the spare toggle to operate his garage door opener which he hid in the headliner. Pretty extreme, but would give you an idea of what's involve to use the toggles for alterior functions.

Again, good luck,

James

UK MINIs aren't the only ones with a full set of toggles..
My Mexican MCS has rear fogs and a full set of switches as well. So I guess you could drive to Tijuana, go to the MINI dealership and order up complete a toggle switch row from them!

Hmmmm..... How 'bout Canada? I'm MUCH closer to Canada. I don't seem to recall the canucks having the rear fogs either, but I can't really remember.

See this site about adding a switch to the switch panel.
