So I want to replace my 17" webspoke with the retro looking Konig Rewinds, but don't understand what tire size I would buy to go with.

Not looking for ultimate performance.

I have tried to do research and think that 205/55/15 would be my first choice with 205/50/15 as second. Does anyone have any thoughts? Clearance or rubbing?

205/50-15 is pretty significantly shorter than stock. Since you are not racing or autocrossing, you would probably be better off with a 205/55-15.

If you are thinking of trying it, 225/50-15s can fit but may require a few tweaks. My car is lower than stock, so if the rear dampers are adjusted to the firm side the tire just barely touches the inside plastic edge of the rear fender lip over bumps. It is slowly curing itself as the fender lip wears away.

If front, I had to install some 5mm spacers to get the tire off of the strut, which it was also just barely touching. Again, my suspension and alignment isn't stock. The 205 widths shouldn't have any fit issues.

no rubbing on 15s...

205/50 will make your speedo off by a little and lower your car .5 inches....but it looks great (ssee below) This will also help acceleration

205/55 is more stock and will keep the speedo and ride height

So basically just choose which of those you want.
