CAI/HAI and MPG

How much of an increase in gas mileage, if any, has everyone seen when replacing the stock air intake?

Little bit...

I did see it go up a little bit maybe 1-2 mpg but I also have seen it not change because it is so fun to hear the supercharger scream at full throttle But if you behave yourself you should see slight gain.

If you gained a full 10 MPG, then what were you getting before the CAI?

It's been a while since this thread was first posted, but I'd be interested in seeing if anybody has some additional thoughts on the question.

A CAI might increase your gas mileage slightly but there is no way that the benefit is 10 mpg. To get a 10 mpg increase one had to radically change ones driving style.

I don't understand how people spend the $ to get a CAI for increased performance and sound, then put around like granny's to save MPG....

Logically, you should see an increase in mpg because of the a reduction in restrictions. It's probably small, and lifting your right foot a little would be much more effective. Also, once you install and intake, you'll probably get on it more just to hear the wonderful new sounds that your MINI makes.

I was getting a regular 24 mixed driving, if I really babied it I could just barely achieve 28mpg, when I rounded up. CAI brought be up to a regular 33mpg mixed 34 highway, with all time high of 35.5, driving in spirited mountains. There was no change in driving style, aside from I would step on it a little more on the on-ramps to hear the S/C howl.

Seriously trolling posts from a year and a half ago?

Simple, if I budget X dollars per week for fuel, the more saved on gas during the commute means I've got that much more in the budget to play with in the twisties on the weekends. 130mi a day on a 6 day week, saving 5mpg can start to add up with gas sitting @ $4.50/gal.

Of course some people do get it purely to be more efficient, and given many view the MINI as easy on gas econo-box, someone modding to increase that benefit would not be the slightest bit surprising.

Let me say first off that I absolutely love MS MINIVER ... but I am not in a financial position to just go out and replace her with a brand new MINI just for the better gas mileage. As it is, just to be able to call her my own, I had to opt for an '03 MC with 85K miles already on the odometer, which is fine by me. Like I said, I love her.

Now that I have her, though, I'm thinking I'd like to do some different little mods since I plan on keeping her for as long as I can. I've done some very minor graphic things, but I've been seeing a lot of stuff on here about HAI's & CAI's, so I thought I'd look into one or the other since they sounded interesting. But if adding one was going to hurt my gas mileage, then I just wasn't go to go there. At best my mileage is in the 26-29 range (sometimes 30 if it's all highway), so I don't want to end up doing worse than that.

Maybe it was a clean filter as opposed to a old dirty on that could make such a difference? The question I ask is when you got it had you replaced the stock filter ever? A dirty filter can cause a big drop in MPG.
