I just replaced all of my brake pads with EBC greenstuff and the break squeak is actually worse than the stock pads. The stock pads had plenty of material left (22,000 miles) but I wanted less dust and a better pad. The rotors looked fine with only minor grooves in them. I broke the new pads in as per the instructions. How do you relieve the squeal?

 

more info necessary...does the squeal always appear, only at initial braking, only during low-pressure applies? does it seem to come from all corners, or one specific one?

 

I have read that many people say squaking is usually caused by the pads not being "bedded" correctly. Or the word is broken in.

 

Did you apply anything to the pads to prevent squeaking? Even stock pads call for the application of an anti-squeal compound on certain surfaces of the replacement pads.

 

I haven't done this but hate how my car's brakes squeel. Usually when stopping at a light

What did you do for a brake in, when I swapped mine out for cermaics they said the break-in was a hard stop from 40 then 60 then lighten up for a few days I had squeaks in the last second before stopping for about a week and been quiet ever since, no anti-squeal needed.

^ you have to put this stuff on before you place the pads back into the caliper...which means you'll have to take the pads out again.

The squeak is from a normal stop, not hard braking. I did break in the pads according to the instructions (get to 40 mph and slow to a stop, repeat for a few miles). I did not apply any compound to the pads on the install. The pads did come with an extra rubber strip (adhesive on one side) but they did NOT fit the pads so they went in the trash.
Will the Disc Brake Quiet fit this need even on the inner pads? The inner pads had spring clips built in that attach the pad to the piston. It seems that these wouldn't need any compunds.

 

sounds like anti-squeal should help. the sticky shim should have gone on the outer pad (not against the piston) the same applies for the brake-quiet, only on the outer pad, try to keep it in the area that contacts the fingers, anywhere else is pretty much useless. if you can't find the brake-quiet, most auto parts stores carry some type of anti-squeal compuond that can be applied in the same area.

 

I just did rotors, pads, wheels and tires and that same orangish stuff from NAPA. Just make sure you follow the directions on the bottle. No squeals.

Yep. Put that orangish stuff from NAPA on the piston lip and on the outer pad where the caliper touches it. Wait ten minutes per the bottle and put it back together.

That happened to me on my Landrover Discovery. It was becasue there was too much brake dust on the rotors/pads. I say just give it a nice cleaning. Hope that solves it.

 

Apply Lubri-Moly to the back of the brake pads. It should help a lot

 

I love NAM... every time I detect something untoward going on with my MINI, I search it up, and learn. Just started hearing the squeak rolling to sa slow stop at lights, at maybe 4000 miles...

 

Well then I guess I'm not the only one with this problem. I didn't notice until after 500 miles that it was doing this, only noticed it with the windows down. Typically at slow speeds like navigating speed bumps it will do it. A solid application of the brakes even at 25mph makes it go away for a day or two. I was thinking the problem was related to the minor corrision on the rotors the day after the car had been washed. Incidentally, anyone have a guesstimate on how long to expect the original brakes to last? The MA at Baron advised me to get the extended maintenance package once I get close to 36,000 miles because I will get back the $400 expense of it in new brakes and rotors which should be ready for replacement by then. I'm used to getting 100,000+ miles on brakes and rotors on my GM cars, --a Saturn SL2 and a Regal. On the Saturn didn't even have to replace the rotors, just the pads. I guess it is a function of how hard I drive the car, or are the pads on the MC designed to wear that quickly? As for the squeak, I can live with it. It's not that bad on mine and like I said hitting the brakes hard makes it go away for a couple days at a time.
