Hellbender 28
Hellbender 28
I searched and couldn't find anything about this site I just found. Hellbender 28 It's about the road to and past Fontana Village. The road is a hoot to play on but I wasn't aware there was an actual site for it.

It's a marketing ploy by the folks at Fontana to try and leverage the
notoriety of The Dragon. Personally, I think it is pretty lame of them
to have done this.
It reminds me of Hollywood producers who can't come up with their
own ideas for new movies so they just remake old classics, throwing
in a bunch of techno-whiz-bang effects, and counting on the popularity
of the original to draw the people. The latest remake of King Kong is a
good example. Even with the new effects, it still stunk in comparison
to the original. We won't even talk about the previous remake with,
I think, Jessica Lange.
Getting back to HWY 28, I really do love the section between the bridge
below the dam and the intersection with HWY 129. That road is a
blast to drive and I actually enjoy it more than The Dragon.
A Hellbender, by the way, is one of the largest salamanders in the world,
growing to a length of over 2 feet and weighing up to 5 pounds. They
are actually native to the area.

I do have to agree with you Pete. Hwy 28 is a beautiful area and great drive. The advertising ploy by Fontana on the other hand seems tacky.
It’s nice they included a picture of the MINIs on the site, but the picture was taken at Tabcat Bridge on the Dragon.
It’s not even Hwy 28.

Um, fellas.....the Dragon was just Hwy. 129 until the folks at Deal's Gap came up with its name. People can better identify with a place-name than a numbered highway. I see what you mean about commercializing, but they DO depend on tourists there for their livelihood....and you have to admit, it's a fantastic road.
Hey Scott (TheWrks)
One good thing, is they will probably be selling "Hellbender" T shirts. More for the collections.
