R50/53 Aftermarket Install of Options
Aftermarket Install of Options
This is so exciting....my husband is getting ready to place an order for our second MINI - I got our first one this time last year - and after getting to drive Andy for a week while I was out of town, he decided he needs one.
He's been very patient with me and even waves at other MINIs whenever we see another one on the road. I'm having the same experiences as most of you where it is less often that the waves are returned...lthough, on our way down to the beach last September, we passed a CR w/ a sunroof that had an enthusiastic passenger waving through the roof at us.
That was great!
Anyway, he wants to know how difficult it would be to install the luggage rack and the illuminated sills aftermarket? Somewhere we heard (or read) that the luggage racks should be done by the dealer - but I don't remember it being a strong enough warning to remember where it came from.
We're just trying to save some on the financing end and if these options can be easily obtained and installed after we sign on the line, then that's what he wants to do.
Sharing any advice or personal experience with this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Re:the roof rack; while I have no direct experience with the MINI rack, let me offer these cautions. If you place the rack incorrectly, it will be sitting on unsupported sheetmetal and will deform the roof. Also, drilling holes in the roof is a really fine way to get an unexpected shower when it rains. In this instance, I would be highly inclined to let the dealer do the install, so that they have the liability for any mistakes. An ooops in this area would be a very costly repair.
As to the sills, just basic wiring involved. HOWEVER any mods you make to the electrical system open the door to warranty denial should you ever have issues (with any part of the electrical system).
Guess it just depends on how much he trusts his skills.
Congrats on the 2nd MINI!!! I hope to be able to do that soon as well.
