No room at the Inn for K9s

I wanted to go to the Dragon this year but waited too long to pull the trigger. I just called Fontana and they said they have no cabin space left. I need a cabin because I would be bringing along my two German Shepherds. Would love to leave them home but these are working dogs that you just don't leave with anyone other than family. Kennel is out of the question, I would rather push my car off a cliff than risk them at a kennel My pups are great in the car and love to travel.

Sooo......does anyone have any ideas for lodging that wont put me 50 miles away? I open to anything other than sleeping in the car .

Shawn

If you belong to AAA, they publish a booklet all about traveling with pets, including a list of hotels/motels that welcome them! Check out aaa.com.

i don't know much about that part of the country, but motel 6 takes dogs (one per room, ) and doesn't charge any extra.

I suggest that everyone wanting a cabin see about getting on a waitlist or sharing a cabin. There are inevitably people who cannot keep their reservations. Do check out the spare room(s) thread in this forum, also. Don't give up, yet.

If these are K9 police dogs you should inform the motel/hotel of that. Some will allow that type of animal due to the amount of training the dog has had. It reduces the chances of the animal doing damage which is the sole reason why places don't allow dogs.

Just to clarify: Fontana Village allows dogs, but only in the cabins, not in the Lodge/Inn rooms. There is a $100 flat fee for having dogs.

I like your suggestion, Matt. Fontana may make allowances for specially-trained K9 police dogs.

What about specially-trained, MINI-driving bears?

And if by chance thay are guide dogs, Fontana can not charge extra, and the dogs can go anywhere the owner goes.

When I called Fontana said $150 non-refundable. I didn't mention the type of working Dogs they are. My Older guy is retired, served the Military during some very special events and also for a short stint after 9-11 I will leave out what his specialty is....... My younger Female is in the middle of her explosive detection training(doing exellent!) and does protection work, that is when she isn't filming (small part in Nicole Kidman movie called Furr not released yet , and Moury Povitch show) I will give them a try on Monday to see what is open to us after some more details are released.

Thanks for all of your help!

Plus Athens, TN is not that far, and there are some other places to stay at that end of the Dragon. Would it be such torture to come up the Dragon first to meet people there? And possible not have to "run back" after the Midnight Run?

Seriously, no one should give up.

I am in one of the cabins, and bringing my sharpei.... I can't promise anything, would have to talk it over with my fiancee, but I'd not have a problem letting the dogs camp out at our place....

your dogs could stay in the living room and mine in the bedroom possibly.

Just an idea anyway, don't know that you'd want to be apart from them that long or that they are good with other dogs or not.

We might be able to work something out if you don't find any other alternatives....

We're leaving our working dogs at home,German Shepherds and Beaucerons and two nutty Australian Cattle dogs, no problem letting someone else watch them.
We'll have a cabin but don't plan on bringing dogs since I won't let any in the MINI!
Our GSDs were on the Animal Planet show "Breed All About It" on the German Shepherd (I can't remember, but I think DH had Ari on there doing bite work).
So what lines are yours? If you can make it, hope to meet you!
Annette

I looked at a site a few weeks ago of all vacation house rentals that you could get by the week... quite a few of them said dogs welcome. If anyone has that site, maybe you could find one that was available.

Edit: that was easy to find http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals...mountains#4131

those are closest to the Dragon but there are lot of others in the general area too. Anything with a paw print is fine with pets.

Ha! My two dogs (50 and 70lb lab/shepherd mutts) and I compete for space on a queen-sized bed. I usually lose.

K9, how are you carrying them in the car? Do you do anything to fill the "dip" behind the rear seats? My pups don't care much for the MINI; it'd be better if they'd pay attention and use the oh-shît handles (or at least lie down) instead of trying to lick my ears and sit in my lap. They don't appreciate acceleration and cornering, either. :-(

Good question and you would think I would know. Whenever we traveled with dogs it was always difficult cause they cant just sit there for 10 hours on the road. I never saw one with motion sickness ...

I understand why K9 won't leave them in the kennel (last time we did that my male lost 5 pounds!. He was heartsick. BUT ... there aint no way on this earth those dogs are getting into her MINI. Plus all the other stuff ya gotta take (like beer!)

Best of Luck K9 ... I can empathize with ya!

One of my puppies used to get really car sick so we got dramamine pills and would give him 1/2 a pill about 1/2 hour before he would get in the car. Asked the vet about it and what they wanted to give me was the exact same thing - and I mean exact...the pills had the same markings and everything

Car sick dogs, oh boy does my boy get car sick. I have a very big, very friendly black doberman. He is a 80 lbs wimp in the Element. We get 5 miles down the road and he starts blowing chunks..... Big chunks. Yes, dogs that the exact same medicines we do. Just usually higher doses. My vet told me give him "motion sickness medicine" but double dosage since their metabolism is so high. My old red doberman female I had for 11 yrs went every where, she loved to ride along. Poor Remus gets car sick in the driveway! :-) Morgan
