Washer Fluid

Any recommendations on a particular brand of washer fluid... I'd rather use something that won't freeze like the blue stuff. I'm just finishing off whatever was delivered with the car... what brand comes delivered?

BTW... the new blinking yellow light for low washer fluid is really annoying.

I use the Rain-X brand. Don't know if it freezes, I am in Alabama so freezing isn't such a big issue for me

I got to tell my story.. Here in FL sometimes the Spiffy Lube type shops will use fluid that will freeze at 32. We go to MD one winter and hit a snow storm in my New Beetle. Dam the washer juice did not thaw till we got home.

I've been using Prestone brand. It's kind of an ugly yellow color. It doesn't freeze & it appears to have a type of rain x action to it. I think it's great. You can find it at Advanced Auto Parts stores.

My story's the other way around.....we drove to Florida from northern Ohio during the winter, filled up the washer bottle in Florida, got into a frightful storm in West Virginia on the way home and the durn washer froze up solid. Car had to sit in the garage for two days before it thawed.

In the summer I use H2O. I've heard rumors that washer fluids are highly corrosive. I use washer fluid in the winter 1) because it doesn't freeze and 2) it takes better care of the dirty spray and stuff like that here in upstate NY. Water works like a charm in the summer, cause the two or three times a summer I actually use the stuff it's just for dust or whatever.

I'm sure most brands of washer fluid are pretty close though.

I use generic blue stuff and add an ounce of either 1Z (Einszett) Kristallklar Premium or
P21S High Performance Windshield Wash Booster to each gallon.

yellow bottle? (lov that stuff, btw)

(does it prevent snow... ? no way~ gotta get me some!)

Your basic blue washer fluid is distilled water, coloring and a splash of alcohol to prevent freezing. Being " highly corrosive" would not be true, however, high alcohol content may dry out old school rubber wiper blades contributing to that myth.

Tap water would not be my first choice as minerals can clog up the jet passages making for another problem. Use the blue stuff in the summer and a branded low temp product in the winter. Rain-X applied 3-4 times a year cuts down on squirting gallons of fluid trying to see.

I got some free samples of Aquapel with my PIAA silicone wipers, and I
really like it. Works better and lasts way longer than Rain-X.

Could it be possible that the shops in Florida have a habit of diluting the stuff because freezing temps are almost impossible. And when Florida does experence freezing temps, it last for about 15 minutes.

I lived off of that for years... till a friend gave me a bottle of the rainx brand... i like how it also treats the windshield so i can see better in the rain... I know it sounds stupid but there is a difference..and not just the high cost

I buy my Rain-X washer fluid at Wal-Mart also. Can't remember how much it is but it is cheap.

You might buy 2 bottles if you have Zenons. The 1st time I refilled I opened the bonnet & filled the 1st reservoir I saw which turned out to be for the headlights :impatient I used the whole gallon & had to go buy more for my wipers . On my '05 MCSC, Drivers side reservoir is for headlights / passenger side reservoir is for wipers

We had a similar experience with BMW brand. Probably the same stuff with a different label...

Way back when I worked at a full-serve gas station, the manager had a special concotion he mixed up for the island buckets: half washer fluid, a splash of ammonia, another splash of Simple Green and topped up with tap water. Man, that stuff worked great, but I'm not sure I'd put it in my washer reservior.
