Factory iPod adaptor question

First, I really did search, but found very little info, so I thought I'd post.

My car is a 2006 MCS with the h/k stereo upgrade.

We got it last October, had the factory iPod adaptor installed and it has NEVER worked with my iPod mini and works very poorly (plays songs only in alphabetical order) on my wife's iPod 40G.

With my iPod, the iPod displays "MINI" and the check mark, but the display "flickers" and does not play. The head unit just says "no magazine." I have the 1.4, now 1.4.1 firmware on my iPod mini, and no difference. I have plugged into other vehicles (another Mini and a BMW) and the same thing happens. The dealership has been unable to do anything.

Then I did a test at the dealership. I plugged into a new Mini that just had the iPod adaptor installed, and my iPod still does not work as described above. A dealership employee plugged in hers and it worked fine!

I ferreted around and there are apparently different models of iPod mini; mine is M9437LL.

The dealership has no idea what to do and says my iPod must be defective. That does not seem right, since my iPod works fine with my home and office computers and operates normally by itself. I am wondering if the factory iPod adaptor perhaps does not work with certain iPod models?

I would sure appreciate any ideas. I am toying with just getting the Ice Link, but I think the factory setup will have to be unistalled, right?, since some pins are moved around. I'd also like to know EXACTLY what Ice Link P/N to get for a 2006 MCS, as my search turned up problems depending on the head unit or CD changer style and perhaps model year differences.

Thanks and sorry if this is repetitive.

FWIW, I just tried another car. My friend's iPod mini model 9160LL with firmware v 1.3 works fine, my ipod mini does not.

Still baffled and would appreciate any input

Have you tried to reset your IPOD to factory default (brand new) configuration and pluging it in? Don't put any songs on it. Just see if that works and gets detected.

Looks like you've got a great excuse to get a brand new iPod Nano.

I can't remember if the iPod Mini's were Firewire, USB2 or both. My wife's Nano is USB2 only and does not work on my OLD Belkin Auto Kit connector. I wonder if that might be an issue with yours.

Does your wife's iPod have MINI Playlists?

That is, did you set up MINI1, MINI2, etc? Will it play your wife's iPod in random order (with RAN selected)?

Without those Playlists, my adapter will play alphabetically, too
