Factory Nav question-ish

Ok this is a little off the beaten path but I was thinking the other day when figuring out my list of mods for my 06 S that I would like to add navigation. I really like how the factory Nav looks however I ordered my car with the chrono pack due to financial constraints at the time. I am wondering if anyone has swapped the chrono pack for the nav. It probably could be done, however the dealer would slam me on installation if they were even interested. This is probably a question for my dealer but I figured I'd ask NAM first so that way I wouldn't get laughed at to my face

Anyway, assuming that my little idea won't work, are there any nav systems out there that are better than stock? Any navs that if you bought another car the first thing you would do is buy that particular system?

Thanks in advance.

It's been asked before, and the reality is that it is not financially feasible. The good news is that you can get any one of MANY GPS systems for far less than the MINI system. Do a search on GPS, and you'll get all sorts of info. I use a Garmin 60CS, as I also use it for hiking, but there are many models to suit your needs.

Yep, there is much more to it other than adding a DVD player, a screen, and an antenna. There BMW system has gyros and wheel sensors that have to also be put in place as well as the wiring harness for all this. It would be very costly.

Tom Tom makes a nice unit, you should check it out.

I second the TomTom suggestion. Bought a TomTom GO 700 over a month ago now, and love it.

Keep the chrono...

Keep the Chrono package and install an aftermarket Navi. I loved the Navi when I first got it and the more I use it the more I hate it. Its not very intuitive. What do I mean? Use a Toyota/Lexus GPS and you will understand

My recommendation

I am installing the Pioneer AVIC-N2 into my '06 MCS. It is a stereo, GPS, CD player, and DVD player. It has a lot more features than the factory option, and is even voice activated. You can add an iPod adaptor to it, and it can tune in XM or Sirius. If you buy an XM tuner to go with it, you can use XM NavTraffic, just like the new Acura RL. I bought mine for $1240 from ibuydigital.com.

Read the specs on it at: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...089333,00.html
I used www.pricegrabber.com to find the lowest price, and ordered my installation kit from www.crutchfield.com.

Good luck.

I second the Pioneer Nav unit

I have a MCS 05 with the factory Nav system. If I had it to do over again I would buy the Pioneer system. The factory Nav system is very poorly designed.

Thanks for your posts. Doesn't the Pioneer screen block the center speedo (or Chrono pack in my case)?

I saw in a post somewhere that one of the Garmin units has a British voice option. Anyone know which one that is? I could look it up myself..but I'm lazy.

Also, for those of you that have aftermarket units, where do you have them mounted? I was thinking in that little cubby below the toggles would be a good spot. Could fit it flush if it was small enough. Anyway, if you have some pics that would be great.

Thanks Again

The following thread has pictures of the Pioneer AVIC-N1 (latest version is N2): https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=24082. This type of unit has all-in-one function including stereo, so it replaces the MINI headunit. The screen folds and disappears into the unit when not in use, and there is a photo that shows how much it blocks the speedo when it is open.
