A last rant about MMW '05
A last rant about MMW '05
I had an excelent time and met many awesome people.
Old and new minis alike!
Here is my rant...
Never any results posted / printed
We paid $ and entered events that were scored.
Either: no one really cared / "funny " busines was going on.
Either way not good!
Not even a reply to MANY emails / messages on the "video"
(I know that wasn't an official element ... but I paid money, NOTHING >>>)
More disention between old and new ... COME ON PEOPLE !
It wasn't the first OLD & NEW.
As a sugestion maybe the NEW should vote for an OLD favorite
and vise versa. Maybe people just don't understand.
The OLD is why the NEW are here.
the new is helping the OLD reach more.
Thanks to both clubs and to all those who worked in some way.
The wind has been taken out of the sail
I have been and currently am a member of several clubs.
Seen them rise, fall, suceed, fail,
MOASF and NORCAL are SO CLOSE to being GREAT together and seperatly.
I am going to Arizona as NOTHING will stand in the way of MY passion.
So ... If I haven't pissed you all off.
I am still after any VIDEO, any PHOTOS.
Anyone know how to get this on MOASF PLEASE feel free to do so, or let me know how to.
HAPPY MOTORING TO ALL

Nope. I think there was a Shelby club event the same weekend.
And I love the tracks more than the parking lots! Also, Ive been a memeber of the Nor-Cal Shelby group for longer than I've been into Minis. They let me hang, even though I don't have a Shelby, just a little old EFI restomod 65 convertable...

I was informed by Gordon the Video was recently finished and is now available. A two DVD set 90 minutes for $35. I have not seen it but I want one as well.
He may be at the NorCalMINI meeting on January 29th.
If anyone is interested PM me your e-mail address and I will be sure Gordon receives it.
As for the awards there was two seperate times they were given out. The first was Friday or Saturday night at the hotel (sorry I don't remeber which night) the other was Sunday night at the Blackhawk Museum. I don't know of any list but I will try to find out.
I hope this helps,

Since my club – MOALA - will more than likely be hosting MMW next year and I will probably be on the board, I would like to get some constructive ideas. What can be done to make it better and fair for both new and old Minis? Any suggestions and/or ideas would be appreciated. Please email them to me inim_mini@yahoo.com

Did you ever get your full refund?
Keffer
I would encourage people to give suggestions to the organizers ahead of time, rather than afterwards. Mini Meet has been an annual event, organized solely by volunteers, since 1973. These people volunteer strictly for their love of the Mini community and get nothing more out of it. It is a LOT OF WORK organizing these events and very frustrating listening to Monday morning quarterbacks criticize and suggest what should have been done after the fact. This is especially true after spending dozens of hours as an unpaid volunteer with absolutely no help from said complainers. Although it is going to be at least a year and possibly two until MOALA hosts MMW, we are already raising money and making plans. Now is the time to make suggestions. If for any reason I am not on the committee, I will make sure it will be passed on to those who are. inim_mini@yahoo.com
Keffer, I am still kicking after a VERY big health scare. I did get my refund and I thank you for everything. I was very sad to miss MMW as I heard it was one of the best ever. I am looking forward to this year.

OK
I am posting again as the "monday quarterback" comment kind of "got me"
I started this thread looking for information
I DO understand all the hard work involved and appreciate it.
I worked the AUTOCROSS all day.
I also went to one of the first planning meetings and there was a small group (particularly 1 person) that was wanting to do everything their way and really wasn't listineng to any suggestions.
(I do understand that that person "dropped out"
I stated that I had connections for someone who does PROFESIONAL VIDEOS. That was already taken care of ... GREAT
I spoke about kid activities and that was also taken care of ... GREAT
I spoke about food ... that was already taken care of ... GREAT
SORRY to say but NONE of these seem to have really been GREAT !
RE VIDEO: on record I have paid and never seen anything or even recieved a response to numerous attemps to contact
Any event that has something that is scored (autocross / concourse)
should have some knid of "results". I don't think that is to much to expect.
Not being a conspiracy theory person, but it does have to make you wonder why there are no autocross results.
Awesome people ... I had a great time will go and support again.

Given that the autox event is competitive, input as to the layout of the course should be from both the classic Mini folks, as well as from the new MINI guys. I can't say if this was done or not in '05, but I didn't get that impression...
set up
I was there at the "set up"
we (Mini & MINI) folk were present
Following the direction of the SCCA guy
The run through was done in a classic, and the set up was modified.
I understand that any course wouldn't please all.
concider that the MOKES have a penalty added due to their "advantage"
But that was te course and we all ran it. I did feel that it was a fair.

Bpago, I wasn’t specifically addressing you with my “Monday morning quarterback” comment – you are asking fair questions IMHO. I am more concerned with some of the nasty comments I read by other people in previous posts.
Unfortunately, I was dealing with health problems and personally missed MMW 2005. But I am trying to find out the results of the autocross and will post them here when/if I do. In the meantime, here is a link to MOALA’s newsletter, which contains a few MMW articles and photos. It is a .pdf: http://www.moala.org/MOALA-NEWS/05-SEP-OCT.pdf

As co-chair of MMW05. All I can say is we tried our best with what we had. Those that worked on the event spent alot of time and effort. Some of us (me included) had never done something like this and had to learn by trial and error. I hope next time people will step foward and speak out before the event instead of after. Remember you get out what you put in. Show up for meetings and participate in planning events, SPEAK OUT. If you have an idea LET US KNOW. No one gets paid for this. We do it for our fellow Mini enthusiasts for the fun of it. Neither club made money on the event. So I'll see everyone at the next meeting, right? Hugs for everyone

Larry, I for one am very easy in that I really don't have any expectations on events, their exact offerings, lavish ammenities, etc... From a guy who climbs mountains for days/weeks at a time, and has very few provisions along the way, I'm just like that...
As you probably read in that other thread, what I (and others) felt to be most needed, might be something more difficult to obtain: friendliness and common courtesy. I'm the kind of guy who still, at the age of almost 40, keeps-in-touch with classmates from grade school through college, childhood neighbors and ex-colleagues. I'm a warm and personable guy who cherishes the relationships I have in my life. So, for me to say that I've never felt so unwelcome at any gathering in my life means something...
I sort of feel that getting to the bottom of this sentiment will be critical in making future events as enjoyable as possible. Just sharing, and trying to offer some help...

I was at the event with MethuselahB and the issue was not a lack of planning or a wont of time or effort expended.
Simply put, some of the members acted like complete tools. A measurable portion of the original Mini crowd were ****** to the rest of us. Very hostile and very confrontational.
Don't get me wrong, I kinda got a kick out of a bunch of 50 year old viagra shooters sitting on our cars (when we were safely about 100 yards away), making stupid cracks about BMWs, and making sure their waistlines were safely up around their armpits - you know, the same sort of amusement you get watching a toy poodle growl and snarl at you through a very safe, very secure fence.......
Unfortunately, some of these idiots were wearing STAFF shirts. It made the meet very uncomfortable and wasted the effort many good people put into the event.
Final thought
Tony B and skiploader, I hear what your saying I've been a little Healey in a big healey world for years. Some people are just ----s and you have to go on despite them. Remember they could not have had the event without us. And some of them are very nice people. Think positive and give me your input positive or negitive it helps. I've still got some MMW shirts for freebee's if any wants one
.Ha Ha. Oh I'll be 50 in september. Larry

As promised, here are the results as well as they can be extrapolated (see link below) Unfortunately, the score cards were inadvertently given to the participants prior to them being recorded and much information was lost, making an official list impossible to complete. This was an honest error and there was no ill-will involved whatsoever. From what I hear, the autocross was greatly understaffed and Mike and the crew worked their asses off trying to make this a FUN event for all. How many complainers there volunteered to help? And I would like to stress the word FUN, because this is the one and only reason the Mini Meets exist.

Larry, I hear ya. I did move-on and got over it, only after a few days though
. I didn't start a thread on the topic, but if asked, and because I care, I'll certainly share. While I would love to have a shirt, in all honesty, you should first make sure that no club members want one. My membership has lapsed, so I don't feel it would be right for me to get one until more deserving folks have a crack first... Thanks much though!
Rick, thanks for sharing that thread. I can honestly say that it was not Randy Webb's memory that was in error. He feels as he does simply because of what he was told, repeatedly...
His best time, as announced on the PA system, was confirmed throughout the day on several occasions by him asking what was best time of day (his name and time were provided to him). The last time he inquired was at the close of the event. We were up above track, at the snack bar, scoping-out an area (in the shade) to work on my car afterwards. He then walked-down through the bleachers, to the scoring booth, and heard conclusively that nothing had changed... that his time had remained the best.
To your point, there was no reason to complain at that time... as it was not until the awards banquet that the reality of this major snafu or slight of hand revealed itself. I volunteer at other gatherings in my life, so I understand and appreciate what was done, and what's being said. I however did not wake-up that morning figuring that my services would be needed to aid in accurate time recording. I went there to relax, hang-out with Mini/MINI folks, and to wrench on my car afterwards with Mr. Webb. Yes, to have fun...
As explained earlier, it was anything but... Given the atmosphere and expressed sentiment, if I had to choose what made for the resultant autox times... human error or otherwise, the evidence certainly doesn't paint a nice picture here...
I almost didn’t buy a MINI because of its relatively large size, compared to the Mini that I grew-up with (my uncle’s). I still have a soft spot for the original, so I certainly didn’t come to this event with any negative attitudes toward the classic, or its owners. What was felt and experienced was real, and not provoked from my actions. There were however some preconceived ideas by others there, and they manifested themselves throughout the day…
Everything in life springs from our attitudes and what we think. And there were some serious attitudes at that event; and not of the type that make one feel welcome, or promote fun. That is what must be addressed before anything else, I feel…

First off, thanks for the link. Secondly, none of the following is directed at you. I'm a little frustrated that the focus of what went wrong seems to be on the number of volunteers. Except for the autocross, there was plenty of staff lolling around.
I personally could care less who won the autocross and took home the fancy coffee mug. I came to have a good time, and I walked away feeling anything but.
Point is - Webb did not accumulate those cone penalties on the runs as described on your link. Tony and I were standing right there. We watched all of his runs. There are several factual problems contained within the link you posted. I won't bother going into them - it really doesn't matter whether the results were intentionally skewed or whether they were skewed by sheer buffoonery - they are skewed.
Point is - several of the staff members were confrontational and antagonistic and complaints were made at the time to other staffers who couldn't have cared less.
Point is - What I will remember of the 05 event is not who won what in the autocross, or whether or not it was understaffed, but the hostility of the hosts. MOASF needs to understand that many people who attended the event are associating their group with that hostility.
The Saturday following the event I was at Mini of Concord getting some rattles attended to. There were several people in the waiting room. A conversation was struck up that I did not take part in, but listened to. It was about MMW and the three people discussing the event all discussed the attitude towards the BMW Minis. It was pervasive. It was noticed by a lot of people and it turned alot of people off on attending future events.
I am sure that when your group hosts, they will stress FUN. Unfortunately, and despite claims to the contrary, the MOASF members weren't listening when it was stressed to them.....
