Help me decide on the intake.

I am going back and forth and can't seem to make up my mind, so how about some help. My two choices are:

MyMini Cooper filter:

or, K&N filter:

Does any one have any opinions before I let the wife buy me the Christmas present?

P.S. Rick, I know you can make me one for $90, but keep it to yourself...

Heck it's christmas

Why sweat the details?
You'll be fine in any case.

Does color make any difference? Your MINI is LY.
Appearance is a criteria. Blue is nice and probably shows less dirt in the long run.

For the MC sometimes there can be rubbing of the inner bonnet so check for any fitment issues.

Increased power isn't really that much different between similar models of intakes, nor is intake loudness.

Don't forget the matching cat-back exhaust for your birthday (if you don't already have one).

well, b/w the two, the K&N is obviously the superior intake.

What makes you say that?

Its K&N, proven quality.

The MyMINI One is just the same aFe filter that pops up on ebay once in a while. The S intake thay the aFe brand sells is probably the hokiest thing ive ever seen, and that cooper intake tops it!

You have to re-use your restrictive factory rubber intake tube and clamps.

The K&N is a nice smooth transition using a new tube.

My vote is also for the K&N.

My reason why is this: If I mod any part of my car, I want to do it right the first time. I don't want to skimp, and by a cheaper part, thinking that I could replace it later when I get more money, with a better part.

It might take you a bit longer to save up for the better parts, but you'll be happier with the finished product later.

That being said, I agree with the previous poster, that the K&N seems like it is higher quality. Not just because it is a name brand known the world-over, but because K&N has been proven to be the best, or equal to the best...

Lastly, I also like that it replaces the stock accordian-fold tubing, for smoother flow.

I bought the K&N and I couldn't be happier, the sound is great, seat of the pants throttle response is better. No Dyno numbers, but who cares, a dyno run would cost as much as the intake.

My guess is the My MINI intake won't fit the '05 correctly.

Thanks for the replys. The MyMini intake should fit the '05. At least, I was so assured by Pete at MyMini. Real nice guy by the way. That being said, Rick-Not-So-Red made very valid points which I didn't fully consider before. Another thing that was steering me towards K&N is the fact that they have incorporated wire managment into the kit. (I know it's just one small bracket, but I hate loose wires, or having to zip tie stuff where it doesn't belong.)

So of I go to place my order.

Is this a good filter?

Last I checked PiperCross didn't officially have anything for the '05. That was couple of months ago. Could have changed.

Progressive size layered foam filters such as ITG or Piper Cross maintain their flow better as they load up with dust than do oiled cotton types (K&N). Unless you're not bothered about the need for more frequent cleaning and re-oiling to maintain performance, I'd be looking for an intake that uses foam.

I agree with you and would like a foam filter. However, no one makes it for '05-06 Coopers. Hence, the pointed question about the two options available.

But you do bring up a good point. How often would you clean the K&N filter?

Every 10-15K miles, or when it looks dirty.

A local MINI shop installed a lot of Pipercross PK222 to 05 MINI Cooper. Zero complains and it fitted So I think the Pipercross in a 05 is no problem?

While I was looking for the intake, I did look at PiperCross. However, they never listed any of their intakes for regular Coopers as fitting the '05. And even more so, their web site still lists '05 Convertible as one of the cars they need to conduct testing on. That did not give me much confidence, so I looked somewhere else.

They also never said it did. And I am usually cautious about buying stuff unless I know it will fit.

Ah. For some reason I missed the fact that you were talking about the same intake...

Edit: I meant to post this in the other thread... forgive me, I'm hopped up on cold meds.

Has this been confirmed? I know their website says it will fit, but it also says it will fit '02-'04, so I'm skeptical. I haven't yet heard of anyone actually installing one.

The 05 has a different airbox than the earlier models due to the change in motor mounts--the 05 filters have one of the corners cut off to fit the box.

Neither have I, but I know it fits. MyMini has a description on the part.

Doesn't Alta have foam filters, or do they only offer that for the MCS?

Heck if I know. I clean the ITG foam filter in my M3 once a year, but that's a track car and doesn't see all that many miles anyhow. If I lived a mile up a gravel road in Arizona I guess it'd be more often than that. ;-)

I think Alta is strictly MCS.
