Navigation & Audio 03 MCS Anyone had problems with frozen Navigation?
Here are a few other threads on the same issue:
GPS has problems under 37 degrees F
Nav system doesn't like Chicago temps
Hope they help!

I just had to see what the commotion was about: Temperature frozen, or OS frozen! I was gonna say, I hope microsoft isn't up in the house, yikes!
I'm kinda surprized the Nav doesn't work below freezing, I would think that would be a critical aspect of the specification! Isn't the display LCD? Doesn't everyone's cell phone work outdoors? What's the deal with the Nav display? I hope MINI comes out with a retrofit with a new display - otherwise that's $1600 that only behaves most of the time, hmmm.

doesn't point where you think it should. Here is the correct link.
Regarding the question beign asked: At low temps there are three major ways that problems can happen:
1. The LCD display fades out, as LCDs always do at cold temperatures. The fluid inside them gets sluggish. Given the Mini's heater system, this fault will probably clear itself after a few minutes.
2. Poorly mated connectors somewhere either in the display head, or in the NAV computer box under the seat, or in the GPS receiver in reas passenger wheel well, or in the wires going between them. This will probably show up as an intermittent -- sometimes it works, sometime it doesn't.
3. Most likely: The NAV computer relies on access to the CD to fetch & update maps. The data on a CD is written in a really tiny groove that is read by a Laser and the whole read-head assembly has to track to accuracies of microns. It is entirely possible that the computer has a CD drive that has some mechanical tolerance problem that makes it not track properly when cold. Getting warm will probably clear the fault, but the area under the seat takes longer to warm up. If it is a serious problem, it should be a clear warranty replacement.

Thanks W3IWI - i've also corrected my link. I guess I was doing too much cut/pasting when I posted that to keep it all straight!

Its not the LCD screen acting up, its the main unit under the seat thet is causing the problem. I contacted my local dealer and they are aware of the problem and said it is only some of the early production units.
