Harmon Karmon Drive+Play

Has anyone installed the new HK Drive+Play (DriveandPlay) in their Mini? Anyone have pictures?

I'm intending to put it in on the AUX line of my Alpine 7998 and wondered if anyone had done something similar. I'm looking for pix if anyone has them!

Looks cool, but I want something to play on my nav screen. Dennison talked about it but didn't deliver.

Where would you put the remote?

I was looking at that this weekend. I almost think it could sit underneath the handbrake lever. I'm not sure how high it sits up. You wouldn't need to "see" it to work though provided that you could see the screen.

I'm really digging this thing.

I was thinking about installing the control **** on something that sits in my cup holder (between the pillars and closest to me) and the screen somewhere close to my speedo.

I'll have to get a closer look to see if it will really fit and look good because I'm a minimalist when it comes to my interior.

I just got wind of this as well and that sounds like a good way to set it up.

I am assuming that you would need that Aux Line adapter from MINI to make this work, right?

Doubt this would do text on the Head unit, right....

Hard call, We have the ICE-Link Plus in my wife's car and for the most part, I really like it. Sounds good, works well. I'll have to see the Drive & Play before i decide....

I'm liking the sounds of this -- but how do you arrange all the wiring so that it doesn't look seriously cluttered? You need wires from the control **** to the main unit, the LCD screen to the main unit, iPod to the main unit, main unit to the head unit... is there some way to route all that so it doesn't look real ugly?

The wiring would be my main concern especially for the power. IIRC you can hardwire it so you won't have to use the cig lighter. But I wonder how involved would that be. Theft would be my other concern too. Is the display easily removeable? I wouldn't want it just sitting on my dash while I'm at the movies.

Seemns like a nice concept but I dislike having extra cables and screens hanging on top of the dashboard. Seems to me this thing could be a potential burglar magnet.

Harman Kardon Drive+Play Install Photos

Hi -

New to this forum. Saw this post and joined so I could post some pictures.

I've had this installed for about 2 weeks now in my 05 MCS and love it. It is connected via the aux port on the HK Drive+Play to my Mini CD Changer port. The HK Drive+Play built-in FM modulator was like all the others I have tried, it sucked. The HK Drive+Play aux connection sounds much better than it's FM Modulator with no signal loss.

I chose to mount the screen up high on my roof so it was not obviously visible. (I leave my car parked at the airport a lot and was concerned about theft.) The control **** is mounted low by the power mirror adjuster. This mounting won't work if you have heated seats. I could not find any other place to put the **** that would be functional and not stand out.

The total install took me about 6 hours to hide all the wires and to make a custom bracket to install the screen on the roof. Also had to buy an extra part to connect to the Mini CD changer port. The bracket I made from about $6.00 in parts from Home Depot. I have more pictures of install and bracket if needed.

Thanks for posting pics. Very nice install. I ordered this last week and should have it tuesday. I don't know where to install the control **** since I have heated seats. I'm definitely having this installed at circuity city if I end up having it installed at all. The new Alpine head units look really nice but then I have to worry if I'll still be able to use the controls on my MFSW. Decisions decisions

Thanks for sharing, looks good, are you happy with it? How it works?

Thanks for the pics and review. I went to Circuit City the other day and looked at this and couldn't find anywhere to fit the controller. If you have the heated seats, you are really limited on possible install points. I'd love to see if someone can come up with a good place to put this.
My other (small) issue was with the controller. It seemed kind of awkward to me, I couldn't quite get it to "go" where I wanted without alot of false starts. I'm hoping it's just the learning curve.

I’m happy with it. The controls are as easy and as intuitive as the Ipod’s. It closely mimics the Ipod in all functionality with the exception of volume control, which is done via the stereo. The system is somewhat customizable as I can setup which items I want to see on the menu and control things like how long the screen stay’s back lighted or whether the screen displays inverted (white on black) or regular (black text on white background).

I am able to operate it without looking down at the control **** and having the display up high, my eyes are never far off the road. It’s not cheap but it works great and I would highly recommend it.

My wife may not be real happy with me for saying this, but I think I would sacrafice the riders heated seat for my Ipod!

Do you have these pictures? I really want to get one of these but I am not handy enough to make a custom bracket (like MiniNut) and am going to have a local car stereo shop take care of the install. I am really looking for a good place to put it. Thanks.

Drive and Play versus Icelink

I recently purchased the Drive and Play.

The reason which I had an Icelink which pooped the bed!!
It never worked right and any help sought from Dension was worthless.
They could care less about helping the end user.

Having just placed the D & P in my car ( on my lunch break)
I have found the system to be working!!! It is great to have the control of my system almost the way I would have liked the Dension unit to work.

my 2004 Mini W h/k would not display text, the Icelink was just not happening and after 3 tries with Dension All I could find the Icelink worth is maybe a doorstop.

My D and P is not installed yet so no pics.
I'm playing with putting the Display somewhere near the Tach.
Everything is quite tight and I definately don't want to drill holes in my dash.
It's going to be a challenge to keep everything nice and clean wire wise.
I'm hoping the sticky tape they supply will hold the display in place.

The control just does not want to go anywhere near my console,
I believe it will have to go on the dash near the speedo
The reach is just about right.
If I try on the left side it is too far away to reach, the dash slopes away there.

It's too bad that H/K doesn't have an option to hook this great item to the steering wheel function on our mini's. But we do have volume on the wheel and selecting the aux is done on the wheel too.

I'm glad someone has put together a unit worth using.

i'

I FINALLY posted some pix up to my site. I'd promised to do this a long time ago and just never got to it. I used a lot of soft focus because my car is filthy!

Anyway, here they are: http://www.taylorsmith.biz/Galleries...lay/index.html

Enjoy.
