Aux install

Just finished installing the Aux connector for my Ipod in my new to me (4 weeks) 03 MC Velvet Red.
Never would have attempted this on my own except for reading some of the threads on this bulletin board. So simple! Did not have to drop the radio head from its mount - just fished around behind after dropping the knee cover area.
Plugged it in and mounted the Aux plug behind the cup holder area up on the vertical cover.
Will wait for a bit for the complete system connector to be able to see the song list at the head and power the unit from the same connector. A little pricey right now and I think there are still issues of display of song lists.
For Aux install used the step by step at:
http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...ight=aux+input

My wife is accusing me of becoming "obsessed" - but I have to say, this vehicle is fun!
Have put in the glovebox organizer, the 05 cup holder and am looking for the parcel shelf soon. Looking for door pull covers as the door pulls are scratched up and something to organize the side pockets

Oh, and the Minii had its first day in the snow - took it to an empty parking lot early and went for a "spin" - drew a few looks from folks. High enjoyment factor.

Glad you are enjoying your MINI!

You NEED a Euro-shelf... in fact I installed my AUX in my shelf. Then when you get your shelf in place you'll see the switch blank in it for the driving lights switch, and so then you'll need to install those too... etc, etc,...

Your wife is right, you are obsessed... we all are!

Cheers!

would you happen to have a closeup of the plug that attaches to the radio? I think I might already have almost everything I would need to make a kit at home, and might be able to save $25-35 by making it a DIY project.

Thanks.

The AUX input is only about $35. The install takes about 10 mins. There's no saving money about it...

Don't mean to hijack this thread but are the storage bins on the doors completely worthless as they are round at the bottom?

yes. I think that they are. Just my opinion though. I kinda use it for trash... Mostly for paper... It also holds misc. CDs and other junk that seems to end up in there.

They're fine for holding my GMRS radios and the occasional CD...

trust me. it's only a few cents worth of parts. It would take about half an hour to fab in a hobbyist environment. Since my time isn't worth more than about 25 or 30 bucks an hour, there's a large net savings by making it myself. Not to mention the satisfaction of both 'beating the system' and having my own aesthetic to the parts.

Aux install - door bins

I agree that the door bins are a tad bit useless. But the space is there and it would seem that they could be utilized in a more efficient manner. Was wondering if anyone had tried the "dividers" that I have seen offered. They look like nothing more than a plastic form that separates the bin into two separate sections. Isn't there something that works a little better? That incoporates a liner base with maybe more than two sections? Something that would keep things from sliding around and make it easy to clean? On the question of a picture of the Aux connector - try the site that I included in my original post as there was a pix there. Jayski

Aux Install

BUMMER...wished I'd known how easy it was. I had the dealer install it at a cost of like $100 - oh well, live and learn! purplefreak60

The aux install is very easy. If you can create the parts for less than $20 then go ahead and do it. I'm for DIY projects. I've done all the installs on my MINI. The Aux input from the dealer is about $35 so it would save you a bunch of time... That's all I'm saying. If you're wanting to learn and/or create it-- Do it! Let us know how it goes. Post some pictures. Maybe you can produce them as an alternative to the dealer... I know a lot of people would be interested.

Does that $35 charge the I Pod too?

I want a simple instal option for my 30g video - but it sucks up the batteries - so I was curious if this set up will charge it too....I'm new to the site and just got my Mini a couple of weeks ago. I already tackled the famous H/K door rattle thanks to this site - and now want to instal my Ipod.

My car is an 05' MCS with a changer.

Thanks for your replies.

Lats,

JB

No it does not. The Aux jack is merely audio input.

I think the Dension IceLink is supposed to be coming out with a 5g iPod compatible interface.

Thanks for the thread link, after reading(and seeing) how easy it is to install, I'll just order the part from the dealer and save 160euros!!!

Moss MINI has these nifty Door pocket Dividers. $19.95 http://www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewPro...62&SortOrder=1

They also have chrome door handle cups. Though I am thinking of using the stuff that they make clear/ invisible bras out of.

You can, but for best results get the version of the ICELink that connects to the CD changer plug back in the boot...

Nope, but you can buy a charger for cheap on eBay.

About the only things I ever keep in the door pocket are my phone charger, iPod charger, and a map of Boston. Basically anything you put in there becomes an accompaniment to the bass on the stereo.

Grrrrr

I must have p$$ed off someone in my previous life b/c for the life of me I can't find where to plug in the aux plug I dropped the knee panel, push the seat all the way back so I have enough room and groped around the back of the headunit.

I guess I should pull the car out of the garage, open the door and do it from the outside. The only reason I got my ipod nano is so I can use it in the MINI

i also assume you do not have an early 2002. I have heard they are different.

Otherwise, it is on the bottom left side (driver side). Feel for a space there. Don't try to plug it in first. Also, make sure you have the back of the stereo. A common problem is feeling the wrong place.

edit - and let us know if that does not work.
