R.Fosgate 7" in-dash DVD, $499

Just wanted to share the info with my fellow Mini owners... There's a website called woot.com, that has a single deal every day. They have a limited amount of items usually, and also usually sell out. How soon they sell out, depends on how good the deal is and what price range it's in...

Anyhow, today (Nov17th only) woot has a Rockford Fosgate in dash DVD player with a 7" motorized LCD screen, for only $500. Froogle.com reports the lowest price at over 1200, and there was one on ebay a while ago which sold for $700+.

If you're interested in a cheap in-car DVD system, from a reputable name, check out woot.com. But you don't have much time.

I'll post feedback on the unit once I get it installed, but since I ordered today, probably won't be for a few weeks.

Is there a widget...

... to make it work with the MINI's on the wheel controls? And, more importantly, will you be running the new Batman movies or the classic Adam West stuff?

I have indeed been on the lookout whenever I go to a CD store, for the original (Michael Keaton) Batman motion picture music score... But when I install this, I'll be able to just loop the credits to get the music when I'm doing parades & events & stuff. Weeee!!!

And as for remote control, the unit comes with a nice remote, and I already have a SWI-X installed. SWI-X will take up to 6 inputs from the remote (any in-dash radio/cd remote), and make them buttons on your MFSW.

I can help you out there...

I can pull make a mpeg4 out of a DVD or DVD's, edit together including repeating segments to lengthen and reburn a new DVD. If you like...

IF you look at the lower righthand side of the Pic. there is a USB interface on the front where you could place a Jump drive or other MP3 players. I"ve been seeing them popping up lately on some of the newer Car stereos. So instead of burning a Disc with the different song you like you could an external HD (5,10, 200Gig) and have enough songs to where you cant listen to them all

It is.

And Mugami, I'm still not seeing any USB, nor did I see any mention of it in the specs I read while I was researching the unit.

KEEN! I've got mine, and it's spread out on the Kitchen table, with me trying to figure out how I'm going to connect it, the control box, the TV antennas, two amps (4x100 & 2x600), and a 10" sub.

I don't want to start until I'm ready to go from start to finish, and I still need to build an amp enclosure and buy cables/wires.

So how do you like your setup? Any pics to share?

Sorry no pixs as of yet, but ill get around to it when i finalize the location of the control box. The amp and wiring setup is still the same as in this old website from my first MINI. www.members.aol.com/mugamini The Amp is a six channel (4x200 & 2x400) from MA Audio. As for the control box due to the limitation of the Din cord. the Glove box looks like the best choice. After i remove the glove box an see what type of room i have i may either slot load it to the back of the box by cutting out the rear of it.. or hopefully can mount it to the top of the box without cutting for storage room. As for the Antenna's no clue as of yet. I think ill run them in the rear side pannels after i get the control box mounted correctly. Also either tear the dash (or radio) apart and change the LED lights so they all are the same color.. or just buy some orange transparent tape and cover the lights on the stereo as a quick fix.

btw with my new winter rims (with mooneyes hubcaps) as shown here

i was thinking how easy it would be to place the bat symbols on the hubcaps

Hmmm... Brake heat issues? Maybe I'll tinker with Photoshop and see about that.

As for the TV antennas, I was thinking the same thing... Running them under the panels, most likely up the pillars behind the seat belts. I'll have to pull out the back before I decide 100% tho.

Is that a 12v fan? If so, it's just a regular PC case fan, no? Nice idea.

I was thinking about doing the same type of setup with a 'sub-floor' and the amps underneath, but I've not decided on that either.

I need to decide on this stuff soon.

yep just a regular PC fan from Radio shack.

as for Heat issues.. since i do mainly hwy driving. and no traffic city driving its not a concern.. I do use different more Airy wheels for when i Autox.

Just finish a shoot for the GTT intercooler which i placed on here.. but forgot to do the Finaly shot. when i go back and shoot that .. ill do a shot of the stereo.

A thing i dont like and it was in issue when i was looking for the orignal stereos i put in the car. Is that it sticks alittle to far out when its closed and the Sharp edges that it has. This doesnt flow well with the interior lines. Going to work on a new Front Facia to fix that. Also since i dont have the MFSW which i believe you have. i have to make a holder for the remote. Which ill do along with an armrest (someday)

Get some 3M dual-lock velcro, and stick it to the bottom of your arm-rest. Hidden & accessable.

Just an idea. That stuff is like $2 as Wal-mart, target, etc...

EDIT:
Nevermind. I see you mentioned you'll do when you get am armrest.

Does stick out a wee bit. Do you have an aftermarket facia kit, such as ones offered by newministuff.com or crutchfield.com?

How is the spacing between the dash & the screen?

the spacing is good about 1/16th of an inch from touching. so it cant be adjusted back with tilt any or it hits. .. dont have a facia kit but i have a few idea on what i might do to fill in the spots and make it flow the way i want.

I have one for my Pioneer deck which I'm assuming I can reuse for this RF deck. Works pretty good for $15.

Tried to install the unit today, but it wouldn't power on. Ensured there was +12vdc on red & yellow at both the tuner and head unit, and ensured both were properly grounded.

Looked on RF's website, and the woot thread for the product, and the only thing I can think of it possibly being that would be my fault, is the parking break. Someone on the woot forums said it had to be grounded. You know anything about that? Someone else on woot said you had to push the power button pretty hard. I didn't push it that hard, but I did hear the switch click, which I thought was enough...

Arg. May be out of warranty too.

kk.. ill see about taking mine back out and getting a shot of what wires i put where. can't remember of the top of my head. I do remember i didnt use the parking break circut at all. Since its goal is to prevent you from using the screen unless you are parked and it up. Some of the indacators like if you have random play and other settings can only be seen or confirmed on the screen and not the front display. I do have it so it will work at anytime. I just can remember if it went to ground or 12 volt. 1 minor thing is make sure you do have a Chassi ground as well.. not just the black ground wire coming from the connectors. I'll get some shots once it warms up a bit outside

I tested ground by going from the head unit & tuner housing, to the metal door frame of the car, and it came up good with close to 0 ohms...

Arg. Got a response from Rockford:
William,

If there is good voltage on the Yellow(12V) and Red(12V) wires and you indeed
have a good ground there really is not much more to check. For that type of
problem the only issue is going to be voltage and ground, otherwise there is a
problem with the unit. If you are still having issues or need repair
information please contact us at 1-800-669-9899.

Response (Steve) - 01/15/2006 07:55 PM
Not the answer I was hoping for... And Woot's not an authrorized retailer for RF, so I may have to pay for repairs. :/
