Free XM Direct units from Crutchfield

For those adding on XM with the Blitzsafe and an XM tuner, Crutchfield is selling the XM Direct tuner (XMD1000) for $49, but with a $50 rebate! On their website, the final price shows up as "FREE". I just ordered mine. Shipping is free, too!

Update

The unit arrived without the rebate documentation. When I called Crutchfield, they said the program was launched before the rebates were printed, but that I would receive it via mail or email. Based upon what I've read in the paper, Sirius and XM are fighting it out for subscribers over the holidays, so they are subsidizing hardware.

Instead of just free, How's about FREE WITH M.O.N.E.Y BACK!...

XMDirect for CHEAP <-- click here

This is not the only place that is offering the XMDirect unit for $34.99 BEFORE the $50.00 rebate, but it's associated with Buy.com, and seems reputable. They are also an Authorized XM Dealer, so the Rebate Form is available for printing right from the site. Since this is a manufacturer's promotion, you can submit the form from this site even if you purchase the unit from another dealer.

After a little more research on the XM sites, it appears is what you need to go for it in a MINI.

http://www.myradiostore.us/xm-radio-...ni-cooper.html

It has the $50 rebate as well.

and here are the instructions on how to do it.

The unit in the other post appears not to work with our HK units.

This is looking more promising all the time! I'd like to get the Blitzsafe and XM Direct. My concern is that I have HK and the HK amp takes up a pretty good sized hunk of space in the audio conection compartment in the boot. Does anyone know if the Blitzsafe and XM units will fit in the left over space?

I am pretty sure the installation with HK won't be a problem since it lists:
  • All 2003 Mini Satellite-Radio-Ready vehicles
  • All 2004 Mini Satellite-Radio-Ready vehicles
  • All 2005 Mini Satellite-Radio-Ready vehicles
  • All 2006 Mini Satellite-Radio-Ready vehicles
That list, of course, includes the HK systems.

Your new link bundles the XMDirect tuner box with a BlitzSafe adapter that IS absolutely required for an easy install. It is nice that this is a complete, ready-to-install package from MyRadioStore.

From what I read you put the blitzsafe unit behind the HK amp. According to the posters on the XM411 site there is room for both. Getting XM and my MFSW buttons all for $139 sounds like a deal.

I called BlitzSafe and MyRadioStore today to get some more specifics....

-- Long story short --> I ordered the bundle from MyRadioStore, as it really is a great deal after the $50 rebate.

Here is some additional BlitzSafe model info :
  • The adapter with a part number ending in "100" will work on MINI's without a CD Changer.
    • It is the least expensive model.
  • The adapter ending in "101" will work on MINI's with or without a CD Changer.
    • This is the unit included in the bundle from MyRadioStore shown in the link posted above.
  • The adapter ending in "103" allows for an iPod/auxiliary connection.
    • I did not ask what all is included in this kit, or what else is needed for a complete install. Contact BlitzSafe for further details if you need this model.
I must also say that BOTH the MyRadioStore and BlitzSafe reps were EXTREMELY helpful and nice people to deal with. Highly Recommended !! I ordered the kit at 12PM Tuesday over the phone and had an email by 3PM with UPS shipping/tracking information. It will be here THURSDAY, and the shipping was FREE. Now that's great service, boys & girls !!

All I need now is a MINI to install it into!!! (my '06 JCW MCS is due here next week... )

It will definitely work with the HK, it is a little more tricky getting the boxes back there with the H/K amp but it is easily doable. IT is no problem at all if you take the side panel off. There is also a MINI wiring harness available that relocates the input to the drivers side if you would rather put it there.

I was going to get in on the group buy price for the Blitsafe to hook up XM direct into my MCS. Heck I even bought a XM direct from Crutchfield. They wanted $180 for the Blitzsafe, but MyRadioStore has the whole bundle for $139. after the $50 XM rebate. Ordered one today. Very helpful sales rep.

Chuck, that's exactly why I went ahead with my order Tuesday - this bundle even beats the Group Buy pricing and includes all that is needed. Ya just can't argue with that .

I got my kit on Thursday exactly as promised. Packed well, including MINI-specific instructions, ready for my new MCS to show up next week. Another KUDOS to MyRadioStore for excellent service!

The BlitzSafe interface unit appears to be extremely well-made and smaller then I thought it would be. Though I know it's a vital and complicated digital interface circuit that's custom-made for the BMW/MINI electronics, it's still hard to justify $180.00 by simply looking at it. Heck, many name-brand indash AM/FM/CD headunits cost less!

But really - if it does what it is supposed to, is as easy to install as the instructions make it out to be, sounds good and I get a $50 rebate - it's all good in the long run...

Coopernicus, when I told the sales rep at MyRadioStore that I felt a little odd ordering something for a car I didn't even have yet he said "don't worry all you MINI guys are like that."

Even though you can get an XM in dash tuner for around the same price or less, to me it's just a theif magnet. I really like the idea of having the OEM head unit in the car. Darned near theft proof.

I should give credit to you for your earlier post. You are the reason I figured out it was a better deal to go for the bundle. Thanks.

LOL - Somehow that doesn't surprise me...

Agreed... OEM headunits generate much less interest to a thief. The entire stereo system was stolen out of my '92 Civic while parked in a long-term airport lot a few years ago simply because an aftermarket headunit was clearly visible. And a friend's Civic was cleaned out 5 times in 2 years because the theft ring knew he would just keep replacing the stolen aftermarket stuff with even better equipment each time the insurance paid off. So he remained a target until he got rid of the car. ...Sad but true, and it just stopped being worth the effort...

So OEM stealth will probably be for me going forward, be that good or bad ...

I should give credit to you for your earlier post. You are the reason I figured out it was a better deal to go for the bundle. Thanks.
Glad to help, Chuck. That's what we're all here for - to share what works best with our MINI Brethern. Please let us know how the install goes and how it sounds...

I am going to go with the XM direct you guys have been discussing (06mcs with HK) The one question I have is that I had planned on having the aux input adapter put in for my ipod.... this is done directly on the headunit as I understand whereas the XM/blitzsafe part goes in the trunk where the CD changer would go.. so my question is are these then two separate additions that won't negate each other? Like do I have to use the "Pass through" portion of the blitzsafe for the aux or can I use the standard aux location?

The Blitzsafe and AUX won't conflict with each other in any way. The Blitzsafe does have a passthrough if you want to use a CD changer or iPod interface. But if you don't need it, you can just leave it alone. Both are easy installs and won't require tools (unless you want to surface mount the AUX jack).

Perfect. Thanks for the reply. I did the blitzsafe adapter with the Z3 (cd changer in trunk) so I'm confident I can get this done too.. I plan on using the Aux for my Ipod Shuffle as an alternative choice on longer drives.
