Can someone tell me again how to do a "one ball" exhaust?
Can someone tell me again how to do a "one ball" exhaust?
Which converter do I remove, and what is done to compensate for the now improper readings from the oxygen sensor? Also, from people who have performed this mod, did it improve either performance or fuel economy? -Jeffy.
Cooper S's have two mufflers and the "one-ball" mod only applies to them. Coopers only have one ball (muffler) from the factory. No catalytic convertors are removed in the one-ball mod anyways.

Just to clear things up heres a thread about it from the MCS forum.

^^2nd Thats what I thought too but I found out jeffy has a MC so maybe he just thought the one ball exhaust mod was for MC's

A lot of fun at my expense...
I was surprised to find 2 catalytic converters for this humungous engine, so I thought it logical to remove one to reduce back-pressure in the exhaust system. Why would they saddle the MCS with 2 mufflers? The extra noise produced by that engine would all be from under the hood- the belt drive and supercharger. Most of this car is well-designed, but a few things baffle me, such as the internal design of the MC muffler ( cut one open- you won't believe it!), and 2 mufflers on the hottest version of the car. Any puns herein are definately intended. -Jeffy.
Jeffy, you can disregard this:
Did the one ball yesterday. I used the pipe and clamps supplied by MyMini. Well made, all stainless steel with good tee-bolt clamps. There is more to it than a short pipe with a 90deg bend. The pipe has a 90deg and another bend vertically plus it transitions from a 2 1/4 id to a 2 1/2 id. For us it seemed was easier to drop the exhaust to make the two cuts required. It also made it easier to make the alignment of the pipe and figure out just where to cut
. The result is: A little bit louder in first and second. No drone! Snap crackle and pop (2005) is still there (a little louder
). Plus 20.4 lbs lighter!

I removed the resonator
I removed the resonator over the holiday and i have to say that im quite happy with it . . . . I currently have an intake installed and removing the resonator didnt make my car noticably louder over the noise from the intake . . . I'm not sure how it sounds at high RPM's under load but with the car at a stand still the exhaust is maybe 5% louder and has a slight rasp at high end. . . I've never heard the rasp while driving though . . Tach out first gear with the windows down and the radio off on a road next to a wall and all i heard back from the wall was a nice throaty intake+ somthing a little extra . . . I love it . . .
Under further use (ie 1k drive from orlando to DE) I noticed that there is no ... I mean NO increased noise while cruising at 90 and i have definitly gained a MPG or two from the resonator removal alone...
I recomend this for anyone looking for a fun low budget mod . . . I got it done for a cool 20$ and the guy took the time to do it right . . . cut the resonator out . . . ground the exposed pipe ends smooth on the inside and welded a matching pipe in place , very smooth and clean . . . its a totally straight shot so no bending or up/down sizing pipe . . .
Anyone else done this ? maybe somone without an intake? would be interested to hear what you thought...

Is the resonator a straight-through design?
Does anyone feel that they got a power increase from removing the resonator? I won't bother with it if it doesn't at least give me a few more ponies. -Jeffy.
I'm not sure what it adds by itself but im pretty sure in the HP shootouts the systems that just replace the muffler dont add as much HP as the systems that replace both the muff and the resonator.... I would say it feels like more power but I'm pretty sure what i feel is sound fast power..
