Any others doing or done crank pulley?

I currently have the m7 16% and thinking of going 2% on the crank pulley but still unsure about it because of lack of testing. Just curious to see if I can get more feedback to help me feel better about doing it.

M7 16% and Alta 3% - no problems after 11,000 miles. Replaced Helix/RDR 19% which was on for 30,000 miles, also no problem.

I plan on doing the 17%/2% or the 15%/2%, but am leaning for the 17/2. I may consider a 17/3, but 1% isn't much of a change so I might as well go all the way!!

I have over 12,000 miles on my 15% & 2% combination with no problems. Great performance and dyno readings.

Anyone doing 19% +2%?I'm thinking about going that route next week.

Also, are any special tools required for removing the stock crank pulley?

Though I read it a while ago, it looks like you need a pulley puller. When I did the crank pulley on my G35, I could take it off by hand since there was a keyway in it. I think the Mini is press on (it'll press on when you bolt it back in). I could be wrong though..I think there is a website with install instructions (maybe alta?)..

The OEM pulley is definitely press-fit. Some of the early aftermarket pulleys, such as Unorthodox, called for heating the replacement hub so it could be slid into place. I haven't followed the newer products to see if they're the same way.

I will eventually change mine to a lightweight one, but I'm waiting until I have the motivation to do a whole bunch of things at once - rather than one at a time.

I have a MCSa with a 15% pulley and as far and I can tell the first person on NAM to have a 0% lightweight crank pulley on a MCSa.

Check out my blog for some pics of the crank pulley install:

Talk to Brian Rohrer at www.eurostyleseast.com . He runs that setup. Since he has a Mustang dyno with all the bells and whistles he was able to see that there was a problem with detonation at higher boost/rpm/temps.

I have the Alta -15% SC pulley and Alta +2% Crank pulley, installed shortly before MDSBrains. Thanks Randy!

LOVE the results!! The lack of drag on the motor is very noticeable...she revs up quickly and boost comes on a little better (probably due to the effective 17%). Some of the best bang for the buck I've spent on the car, period. As far as lack of testing, Randy Webb has done fairly extensive testing.. at least enough to warrant the product if he installs it for 2 years!

Has anybody managed to get a pre 05 model standard pulley off without the BMW puller?

I had the 2% alta crank pulley installed with new stock belt on my 2003 MCS. Car already had 15% alta pulley. Since the install I have noticed low rpm resonance/rattle when I let clutch out in first at light throttle, and also when I lug engine at low rpm, like when I don't downshift coming into the drive. Also at idle I notice a little more rumble/ vibration. Nothing drastic. However, it is definitely present, and it definitely is a resonance at a low rpm. There are no problems with higher rpm. in fact, if you never idled or had to get going in first, there would be no need for the crank damper. I'm going to get new crank bolt and install at proper torque as I have my doubts about shop that installed it. However, if that does not cure the resonance, it's coming off and I'll put on the 2005 stock damped pulley.

SteveS keep up posted on your situation. Your issues are the only ones I have heard of with the crank.

Believe me, I want to make the crank pulley work out. I convinced myself after Randy's analysis that it was a no lose proposition. That's why I'm going to double check the install myself.

I actually lost a belt in testing and had a crank pulley - no problems. As long as the tensioner stop works as it is supposed to, the tensioner pulley should not impact the crank pulley - I assume that is what you are referring to. I am not sure if that would apply to over 2% reductions however.

Hello Randy!!
Could you please explain how to install the Alta Crank 2% pulley on a 2005 MCS and what kind of puller to use, and how to put back the new pulley on the Mini. How to? Thanks.

Henry,

How did that puller work out for you on the supercharger?

I use the factory tools - there are two different set ups depending on which year the car is - to both pull the old pulley and install the new one.

Here are some tips for using standard tools - I've done it that way too.

1) Use a harmonic balancer puller to get the old unit off using different size center bolts. Just keep installing longer and longer bolts to push on in the crank.

2) Heat the new pulley up and slide it on (Bake on 400 for 5 minutes). Make sure it is all the way on, then tighten the bolt.

I do all of the work through the wheel well on the passenger side with the plastic liner removed.

Hope that helps!
Randy

Crank Pulley Install

Thanks Randy!!
The puller worked like charm. It was my first time doing a 15% pulley intall on my 960 miles 2005 MCS and I did it by my self because my friend never show up to help me out . . . Well I did it in 2 hours and I followed your instructions step by step on (HOW TO INSTALL AN ALTA PULLEY). Thanks for the instructions. Also I was hoping if you can make another HOW TO on the ALTA CRANK PULLEY INSTALLATION? with pictures.. . I own a 2005 MCS and now I have 2000 miles on it, and no problem at all with the Alta 15% pulley. I want to install a 2% or 3% Crank Pulley, but I guess you only recomend 2%. Randy how many inch pound do I need to apply to the new Crank pulley bolt to tighten it, and do I need to put Blue locktite on it. Thanks Henry
