Your Pulley: What brand? What size(%) and why? Where did you purchase? Satisfied?

With so many choices I am curious to what fellow NAMers have selected and why? I am ready to purchase and would like some "real world" feedback. Thanks.

1. Helix/RDR (www.helix13.com)

2. 15%. Standard size... A performance boost with no need for ECU upgrades or larger injectors. Seems most either go with the 15% and few other upgrades or go "whole-hog" with a 19% and a bunch of other stuff. I don't personally know anyone with a 17%.

3. Installed by Helix in Philadelphia, PA.

Worth every penny.

Alta 15. Fantastic improvement. I do not think brand name matters a whole lot on this one, but going with the big name cannot hurt, i figure.

Alta 15%. I love it! After doing extensive research and speaking with several people, I went with the 15% from Alta. It was clear that the 15% was the right size for me, but in terms of the manufacturer, I don't think it was a critical choice. Just go with a company that has been around a while and will most likely continue to be around for a while. I have confidence in Alta, but many of the others are equally good.

I'm also a 15% disciple as it will be a very noticable improvement over stock, yet will still be 100% reliable. Mine is an Alta, installed by Randy Webb at one of his pulley parties. I recommend a pulley party wholeheartedly, bench racing, true technical expertise, great chili (thanks Minzilla), it's just plain fun.

check out this site for a pulley party near you.

You'll love the pulley.

Mine is an Alta 15%, gotten from Detroit Tuned and installed myself. 15% for proven performance and reliability. I've been very happy with it.

I have installed 2x ALTA 17% in my both MCS03 and MCS05 MINI's including my other two friends MINI's in the http://www.USMiniClub.com here on Long Island N.Y. We organize Garage Parties all year long and done 8 of the pulley installations on average in 1.25 hrs. We DO NOT CHARGE for any of the work, just ask for donations to the Club and our choice of charity the Salvation Army. Next one is planed for the first Saturday in November so go on the web site and keep in touch. I have driven the 15% equiped MINI and found that the 17% has much stronger response in low RPM's. I did one of the 17% pulleys installations only after 87 miles on my MCS05 and I am very, very satisfied!!!!!!

Good luck with yours.

Paul.

15% Mini Madness aluminum pulley. Chosen for reliability of 15% and for light weight. Works fine so far.

Some one going to tell me why Not to get aluminum?

for you angular momentum fantics:

1. the power to accelerate (change its RPM) a rotating body is proportional to the moment of inertia and the square of the RPM.

2. the moment of inertia is basically proportional to the mass and the square of the radius from the axis of rotation.

3. the crank pulley has about 4 times the mass of the steel sc pulley, located at about 2-1/2 times greater radius.

4. the sc pulley rotates at 2x the crank pulley.

i think what this means (two beers down) is that you would get about double the angular momentum benefit from changing the steel crank pulley to aluminum as you would changing the steel sc pulley to aluminum. Dr. Obnox...

not entirely sure but i remember reading a post somewhere regarding aluminum billet flywheels and how they tended to warp over time given the temperature conditions in the engine bay and gearbox forces. Since the pulley is spinning at such a high rate of speed and the engine bay does get warm, the concern may be over your pulley warping over time. How long? I have no idea.
