Stickies

I thought about just going to the officers with this, but since it is the club forum I thought I'd open the discussion to everyone in the club.

Recently we had a brief talk about stickies on another thread. This talk brought to mind an idea though. Would we want to stickie the active M2C2 events so they stay on top of the thread list until they're over? As the question states, these would only be for the active events and they would be unstuck afterwards. Personally, I'm not a big fan of stickies, but I'm not a big fan of continually having to bump the current events threads to keep them visible.

Thoughts and opinions would be appreciated....

Thanks for keeping the discussion open! (a real 'sticky' point for me ).

Personally, the stickies don't detract anything from my NAM experience, and it is useful to have the most relevant event information easy to find and easy to keep updated.

Often, as the event draws nearer, there's lots of additions, deletions, revisions, and directions, and it seems easier to review all of these last-minute details from the sticky's priority listing spot.

The idea of unstickying events as they expire is a great way to keep us out of 'hell'.

Bob,

You must have read my mind. I've been thinking about this as well and would be in favor of something like this. I think we need to figure out some way to separate the "general chat" from the events posts and keep the events at the top of the list until they occur. I too get tired of having to constantly bump things to the top of the list so people don't forget about them or they get buried in the pile of other things.

I was even thinking that maybe we should re-institute the M2C2 Forum and ask folks to use that for "general chat" and use the NAM Forum for events and other more important topics or visa-versa. This is just a thought but I do agree we need to do something.

That reminds me, I got to go bump the Tweetsie event again!!!

Eric

Thanks for the reply Tarzan. I'm just trying to figure out why the other 35 or so people who've viewed this haven't added their $.02 worth. (hint, hint)

Tarzan has the right idea of the use of stickied threads. Sticky what is coming up that most ppl would be interested in. Unsticky it a few days to a week after the event to allow comments.

I like the idea of a sticky for an up coming event and then release it after the event, leaving a couple of days for comments about the event.

Good idea.

Thanks
George

Not to hijack your thread (too late? ) but DC Metro MINIs does this with events and a "Welcome Thread" - is this what you're referring to? It works well, and you can see what's coming up. Take a peek:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...splay.php?f=85

And, our mods move general discussions that apply to other NAM forums and are specific to our club or region.

Happy Motoring!

Hi John, it's not a hijack if you stay on the subject. Appreciate your input to this discussion.

Sticking in my 2 cents worth....

Posting current events as a temporary sticky is a nice way of not having to go bump in the night... :impatient
Of course, we could end up with a lot of stickies!! Maybe use it for "major" events that the thread starts several weeks ahead of the event?
Then again, I've noticed that threads seem to float back up to the top of the listing, which is how I keep track of them.. The one thing I've noticed is that "stickies" don't have an obvious "track" to see when they've been updated...

Well, now, the stickie threads don't bother me in the least because I like to read all the bold threads indicating a new post no matter where they are in the line up, but don't we already have a sticky "Events" thread up at the top? Could we not use that for event updates?

The Events thread does have the major ones listed. It, however, won't allow discussion of the events. It just gives you a link to the forum thread for the event.

The threads float to the top mainly by being bumped.

As Kicksnake pointed out, threads with new posts are in bold type, stickied or not. Also, the newest post with the date is also listed.

Mentioned this at the officers meeting the other day. We're going to give it a chance on a trial basis to see how it works out.

If you have any pros or cons, please email or pm me

This sounds like a good idea to a first gear guy (I hope I am in first gear now)!

Personally, I think you've gone a over the top now.

There's stickies for events that don't even have dates in the subjects, and they're not stuck in any kind of order. Maybe it's just me, but I skip over stuck threads. At the very least you should get some type of format for "official" event announcements.

You bring up a couple points I can address. First, the forum moderators haven't the ability to change a thread title once it's posted. This can be done only by the site administrators. As far as I know, we don't have the ability to change the thread order, either. I'll have to contact MF or DiD to see if we can come up with a solution to these points.

In regards to setting a format, we can make an annoucement on the forum and in the newsletter about how to put together an event post. Most "old hands" have figured this out, but it would be a beneficial guide to new posters.

This is a new system and we'll work the bugs out of it as we go. Thanks for the feedback.
