The Search For the Perfect Exhaust!

I know this is a very opinionated question, but I felt like this is the best place to ask. I don't want a loud, droney exhaust... the one installed by the previous owner of my car is just ridiculous. It drones at anything above 2600 RPM's, WOT scares anyone within a 500 foot radius of my car. Driving through a tunnel is deafening.

I guess my question comes here. What is a free flowing (I don't wanna see 25 HP losses from restrictive exhausts), throaty, but not overly loud, and not "Hondaish" exhaust. I've been listening to miltek, but as I have the madness header, i'm not sure if the clips from the miltek exhaust will be what it actually sounds like.

I don't like the typical 4 cylinder "bumble bee" exhaust. I'm looking for something with a deeper growl to it, something that makes noise at WOT, but is pretty tame under 4k RPM's.

Discuss!

I've been working on that. Sadly I work in retail and working Sat/Sun is part of the job. I haven't been able to get to a meet yet, as every single one of them are on Saturday!

You could set up a meet at the store perhaps?

I'm assuming you already looked here?

I'm choosing to go with a custom exhaust. Cheaper, and you can always swap mufflers, and tips to change your tone/loudness for a minimal amount after.

Rustyboy,

My dear NAM buddy , the first paragraph on your thread was screaming JCW exhaust till the part "headers" came up. I think your best bet is Miltek. I have couple of friends installed Miltek, the cars sound pretty cool, not very loud and aggressive, not a sissy one either. Very popular application in UK as well. The installation with your headers is questionable and can't answer that, unless I look at the car (which will not happen).

I will go with a Miltek as well, as soon as get some extra money lined up.

Also, I was listening to whiteroofradio podcast when Todd and db talked to Randy from Webb Motorsports and Randy was mentioning about the new project exhaust that he is developing, sounds very exciting, listen to it.

Good luck

Berk

remus is nice - not too loud

invidia is very nice - little louder.

myminiparts.com - has a single sided system that is not very loud but has a low deep tone - heard it today and was impressed. cool tip and wiegh like 20lbs.

I'm looking at the OBX cat back which is not a full catback (neither is remus) and is a supersprint copy for 299 BUT I have not found anyone that has heard it.

What system do you hav eon the car at present?

I've had the Milltek for 6 weeks, with standard header, and love it. It does exactly what you describe as the exhaust you want; deep - dark brown - throaty - sound. No more bumble-bee 4 cyl. sound; much louder when you want it and with more pops when you lift the throttle. Couldn't be happier with it.

Nick,
Which exhaust was too loud that was installed by the previous owner?

Some owners are happy with:
UUC
JCW without resonator
Borla street
Borla Race (louder than street but not overly so).
Milltek

If you have a maddness header I would stay away from:
Quicksilver (would be ok with stock header)
Magnaflow

I wish I knew what kind of exhaust it was. It sounds pretty close to the borla race (sport not street) exhaust videos. The invoices the last owner provided only say "Twin Sequential Exhaust" No mention of what kind it is. It's just too loud for the street, drones like crazy at 50+ mph.

Yes i've looked there already . It's hard to gauge, because something that sound perfect on stock headers may be horrible with the madness headers.

Just looked under the car. The exhaust looks custom, there are no etchings or markings at all on the muffler or tips. There is a single muffler with a mandral bent setup on the passenger side. Perhaps the previous owner had the tuning shop "Build" an exhaust for gains rather than sound? I'd rather lose 5 HP and have a nice sound than have an obnoxious bumble bee exhaust and have the extra power

Small, looks to be about 6-7 inches in diameter. Only one muffler, and no it doesn't hang low.

Yes it did say twin sequential. I like the header, but I have no comparision... lol. Any idea what adding say... a miltek exhaust would do to my HP output? What exactly is a "Twin Sequential Exhaust"

I did a little research, it seems Mini Mania makes an exhaust with a reference to Twin Sequential. Exactly what makes the exhaust so good is beyond my automotive knowledge, but I have a dyno report with the Mini-Madness Exhaust showing about 206 to the wheels, and another one showing 238. I had no idea that changing an exhaust made a 32 HP difference . When I went to Mini Mania's site, I did a search for "Twin Sequential" and it turned up a hit for their stage 2 kit. Looking at the details, I see it says "Select Twin Sequential for a slightly louder, more agressive exhaust note". I don't understand why the dyno reports would show such a sharp loss yet the mini mania kits show 205 HP no matter what exhaust you get.

*Edit* I looked further and found the following picture. This is EXACTLY what my exhaust looks like. If anyone has a suggestion even just to quiet it down a little that would be great, because it seems for whatever reason i'm going to lose 20-30 HP by swapping my exhaust out .

Trust me. Your not going to loose 20 hp by switching exhausts. Even the highest hp exhaust (Borla Sport, Miltek) gains 8-10 hp from stock...max. There's no way the MM unit will give any more than that. I'd go to an exhaust shop and see if they can put a silencer or resonator in it to quiet it doen a bit. That'd be your cheapest option. Otherwise, your looking at big bucks for a new exhaust.
