Otherwise, your looking at big bucks for a new exhaust.
I did talk to an exhaust shop, they told me the best they could do was to put a glasspack in the pipe, and that would run $200-$300 dollars depending on how long it took. Another option he gave me was for him to take the whole exhaust out, and have me sell the whole system (some people don't mind the loud sound, it's just not for me). If it is the Mini Mania exhaust, which I'm 99% positive it is now that I did a little research, it's probably worth at least $250-$300 on the second hand market, perhaps more. Installing a glasspack would only make it slightly quieter, and could change the note to be more buzzy, ect. Basically it could do a number of things, some positive, some negative. I'd rather just pull the system and have a new one installed that I KNOW I like the sound on. My exhaust only has about 2000-3000 miles on it, so it's basically brand new.

I wouldn't do that (cutting up your exhaust to install glasspacks). Sell your used exhaust system here or on ebay and get a more conventional catback. I for one recommend the Scorpion/Playmini as a reasonably priced, great sounding, quality system. They're available at Bavarian Autosport, in New Hampshire for about $550 plus $20 shipping, although there are sales when bavauto knocks off 10% or more.

should be a good link.

I was leaning more towards the miltek exhaust. I don't mind an aggressive sounding exhaust, it's just that the one I have now is loud ALL the time. I want one that is controlled under 4500 RPM or so. Mine has unbearable drone at 50+ mph. At WOT I think it could very well be upwards of 125 db.

Milltek is nice, but rather expensive. I have two friends with milltek exhausts on their MCSs. Still you should at least check out a Scorpion if there is someone in your area with one. I thinks it sounds as nice as a Milltek plus it's less expensive. I have no drone, a good raspy bite, and great WOT ear candy.

The scorpion exhaust is actually kind of growing on me *the sound that is*. My only concern would be flow issues. Like I said, I don't want to lose 20 HP here... I'm going to get some clips of my exhaust in a few minutes... i'll post them up here in a bit. That is if I figure out how to get a version of DivX that works so I can compress the clips.

Found out that the sound quality on the webcam I have is horrible, sorry!

Just listen to the first part of it... the last part of it is just a bunch of feedback from the crappy mic.

how thick is ur piping?

looks ok, but would change it to a dual cannister......those single job's, (exhaust) dont convince me

i had a PlayMini (Scorpion)....nice system indeed!! but im more into the "slash cut" tips as the playmini is "rolled" edged tips.
--also the two systems have different size mufflers,
-playmini's r' huge compared to Milltek's
the pipin' is the same on playmini's, but Milltek's is smaller after the rear flange & into mufflers. mayb somethin' to consider since ur running a nice header!!

I had no idea that changing an exhaust made a 32 HP difference . When I went to Mini Mania's site, I did a search for "Twin Sequential" and it turned up a hit for their stage 2 kit. Looking at the details, I see it says "Select Twin Sequential for a slightly louder, more agressive exhaust note". I don't understand why the dyno reports would show such a sharp loss yet the mini mania kits show 205 HP no matter what exhaust you get.

*Edit* I looked further and found the following picture. This is EXACTLY what my exhaust looks like. If anyone has a suggestion even just to quiet it down a little that would be great, because it seems for whatever reason i'm going to lose 20-30 HP by swapping my exhaust out .

Piping looks to be around 2.5", i'm not 100% sure though.

Couldn't get a representative hearing from your exhaust (plus I'm on a laptop with tiny speakers). Again try to hear as many exhausts as possible before committing to your new one. One NAMer I know went through three or four exhausts before he found one he liked (that was expen$ive).

As for hp loss, I wouldn't sweat it. Catbacks rarely account for more than 7 or 8 hp over stock, and most seem to be about equal in terms of hp gain 4 to 6. I've never heard of anyone switching from one catback to another who lost 20 hp.

so that size should be good on ur header but the noise is a beatch, get the PLaymini, size is big all the way back and out the tips (oh. btw the tips on playmini are also Oval, so that looks kool in the bumper it fills the whole hole)...for its price or go for the gold and get 'UUC' J/K..... (that's the exhaust that i want next ) or Miltek

I'm leaning heavily towards the PlayMini/Scorp exhaust after hearing some clips. I think part of my weariness comes from me not knowing a lot about the tuning history of the car. I have all the invoices, but a piece of paper is different from being at the shop while they're installing the kit, seeing the dyno reports for various stages, ect. When one dyno report shows 206 HP and the other shows 238, and the only notations on the top are "Madness exhaust" and "Twin Sequential exhaust" I started to think about how adding an exhaust could possibly add 32 hp to the wheels.

If anyone has some more clips from the Playmini/Scorp exhausts I would appreciate it!

Oh, and on a tangent, it seems like there was some interest earlier in maybe getting a group buy going for this exhaust. If Bavarian would agree to one (Or if someone can find another vendor that sells the exhaust) would anyone be interested in getting a group buy going?

the exhaust you have

The exhaust you have is likely made by a company called NRP. Northern Rover Products. I have the same exhaust. I love the sound it makes. It probably does not make the HPs like Miltek, but I am very happy with it.

Not sure, Mini-Mania could very well re-label an existing exhaust *shrug*

Silencer

Rustboy,
I think mini-mania sells a silencer for that exhaust. look up silencer and it should pop up.

I have the stock header with this twin-sequential (NRP). The sound is awesome to me.

I have the header, but I have not yet installed it. This is from MINI-Mania as well. I bought it used from a guy who told me it was too loud for him with both the header and exhaust. You might want to reinstall the stock header.

I don't have the stock header :-\. It would be cheaper for me to just get a whole new exhaust (And probably less damaging to my performance gains)

I used to have that same exhaust. It's actually one of the quieter, more refined - sounding systems on the market. Most will agree that a header doesn't gain you much on an S. If you want it quieter, you'll probably do best to either lose the header or put a stock exhaust system on the car.

if its tuned to work w/that exhaust set up, (header-bak) then it probably will loose a lot of power, but i dont think it would be that damaging to ur power, might change torque #'s but thats it. much cheaper indeed plus if ur going to take of a nice piece like this off u should replace it w/a close to or better than part. Playmini is nice get it w/resonator cuz its a little loud w/out. i ran one w/out resonator and its pretty kool but might b loud for u, since it looks like sound is more important then performance

Well, I don't mind losing a few ponies to quiet things down, but I don't wanna lose 20-30 HP over this. I may end up just taking it to a muffler shop and having them slice and dice my piping to add in a silencer.
