Stock Problems/Issues Discussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Cooper (R50), Cabrio (R52), and Cooper S (R53) MINIs.

This may be a stupid question, but...

This may be a stupid question, but...

Are there any mods to increase performance of an "S" that DOES NOT negate the warruanty?

No everything you do to the car will void that part of the warrenty. I.E springs will void you shocks and springs warrenty. You could go with John Cooper Works (JCW) part or Dinan these do not void the warrenty.

John Cooper Works kit - you can do the engine, exhaust, brakes, suspension, everything. It'll get you about 210 hp on an '05, cost you 4 arms and 8 legs, and will keep your warranty in tact.

Nothing you can really do that will not void the warranty! Simple things that will help the performance of your MCS that will require a huge amount of work to install are as many of you know, air intake, exhaust and if you really want to get a good tune, MTH mod. This is on my list of things to do. But all in all, anything you do to the car that was not designed from the factory can cause your warranty to be voided.

Garrett

p.s. like what everyone has posted above, the JCW kits will not void the warranty if done by the dealer.

Different Opinion from last post

Not only John Cooper Works but also Dinan is covered by BMW MINI Warranty

and if you are up for a hassle / fight with dealerships ...

technically anything modified that can be shown not to affect any parts that fail under warranty - the dealer cannot say because "the wheel rims are aftermarket, the transmission lying in the street is not covered"

read the "magnuson moss warranty act" on the net somewhere from the Government or vendors like this one...

The Dinan warranty is NOT a MINI warranty. Dinan warranties their product, as do a lot of the aftermarket mod companies (Alta, WMS...etc).

Here's a copy of our warranty.

Read up on the Moss/Magnuson act, and talk to your dealer. There is a huge difference in one dealer to the next with how friendly they may or may not be to aftermarket parts.

In general, you are safe with a cat-back exhaust and an intake.

Hope that helps!

Hi, and how does one obtain warranty service if you lived in Florida?

Yes the magnuson act is suppose to protect you, but I think he wants to know what things you can do with out going overboard and will not hurt in the long run. Replacing the exhaust and intake should give you no worries. But what is the fun if you can only do so little! Moding your car into what you want is the best part about it and enjoying all of it is even better!

another dumb question

Will the bmw/mini dealer install just part of the jcw kit, i.e. the supercharger or pulley, or do you have to get the whole thing?

Depends. Some dealers, for example, will sell you, parted out, the parts for the JCW exhuast. As for the rest of the TC, doubtful (except for the intake which sells as a separate part).

Not my understanding ....

"from www.dinancars.com/about.asp

Dinan’s comprehensive warranty program, introduced in 1996 with the cooperation of BMW of North America, provides BMW owners with matching coverage to that offered by BMW’s new car warranty, ensuring that Dinan performance enhancements and the BMW they have been installed in are covered for up to 4 years or 50,000 miles. BMW automobiles can now be performance-tuned without the associated concern of negatively affecting the new car warranty coverage, making the idea of enhanced driving fun and excitement appealing to a rapidly growing number of BMW drivers. In addition, Dinan Certified Pre-Owned high performance BMWs are now available through participating Dinan Authorized BMW Dealerships, offering matching warranty coverage to BMW's program.

Dinan is also now expanding its offerings to include the popular MINI models, providing the same attention to detail, solid engineering, warranty and performance that have made Dinan widely regarded as the top BMW tuner in North America. "

Is that not with BMW's knowledge?

How are BMW dealerships performing the Dinan mods on brand new Minis then?

Read the first sentence again. Its a DINAN warranty, not a MINI warranty.

BMW dealers perform the Dinan mods because they are also Dinan sellers and NOT all BMW dealers mess with Dinan either. Each dealer is different

We cover the labor at another dealer or shop after preauthorizing the work, or fly out and do the work ourselves. The part is replaced.

Here is a quote from the warranty:

"Labor charges associated with repair or replacement will be reimbursed at the Webb Motorsports pre-authorized rate after direct communication with the customer and Webb Motorsports."

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hope that helps!
Randy

It is not and the answer to the second question - cause they make Money doing them. Remember that 99% MINI dealers are independent and not owned by MINIUSA.

I've seen now two full MINI internal bulletins specifying how Dinan parts are not in any way covered or associated with MINIUSA. Dinan works solely at the dealer level and will warranty their parts and work with only a Dinan dealer. The upside is that many BMW/MINI dealers are "Dinan Dealers" as well. MINIUSA has made it very clear in their internal communications that the only factory authorized parts that are covered under warranty carry the MINI or JCW name. This is not a knock on Dinan stuff... just a clarification of the often murky warranty issue.

The upside of this is that companies like Dinan or Webb Motorsports (there are others as well) can stand behind their parts with their own warranty... effectively matching anything MINIUSA would offer. I think this is a great way for Randy or even Dinan to set themselves apart from other companies out there.

It's actually very similar to what Dinan does, except that the dealer labor repair rates have already been worked out with the Dinan stuff.
